Gilmore Girls Writer Recalls Failed Plans To Developed Milo Ventimiglia’s Spinoff Series

As a longtime Gilmore Girls enthusiast and someone who has spent countless hours debating the merits of Rory’s various love interests, I can’t help but feel a pang of regret over the missed opportunity that was Milo Ventimiglia’s spinoff series.

As a dedicated gamer of Gilmore Girls, I can say that even though the show wrapped up on TV back in 2007, it’s still an iconic piece of pop culture that keeps drawing new fans with Netflix subscriptions and re-entertaining old ones like me. We may bicker about Rory’s boyfriends, but Jess seems to be everyone’s pick. Fun fact: A Gilmore Girls writer recently shared that there were plans to create a spinoff series starring Milo Ventimiglia, but those never came to fruition.

Fans revisited Star’s Hollow a few years ago through “Gilmore Girls: A Year in the Life,” resolving some enigmas but creating another big one. Rory disclosed her pregnancy, leaving fans guessing who the father might be. Previously, writer Stan Zimmerman spoke to People about his attempts to launch a spinoff in the past. He discussed the backdoor pilot episode in Season 3 titled “Here Comes the Sun,” as well as why Venice Beach was chosen as the location. He shared:

We spent a significant amount of time at that place, often enjoying eccentric meals together. Sherman-Palladino has a strong affinity for Venice… It’s an incredibly vibrant corner of Los Angeles.

In this specific episode of Gilmore Girls, Jess journeys to California to visit his father. This shift in scenery from Star’s Hollow is quite noticeable, and it introduced a plotline that didn’t fully develop due to the spinoff not getting produced. It seems that, much like the rest of the show, the choice of location was influenced by the personal preferences and perspective of Amy Sherman-Palladino.

Many viewers would have been eager to watch a series centered around Jess, leaving us curious about his life after parting ways with Rory and departing Star’s Hollow. However, it was expected that he’d reappear in later seasons, including the special revival A Year In the Life. While discussing this topic with People, Stan Zimmerman also shared insights about how Venice contrasted the usual warm Connecticut atmosphere portrayed in the show. To explain, he said:

In my opinion, she aimed for a completely contrasting atmosphere, from the autumn ambiance of Stars Hollow to the California vibe of Venice. However, it didn’t quite come together as planned, yet it was intriguing to explore Jess’s life and imagine what it could have been like.

Suddenly, I find myself experiencing a strong fear of missing out (FOMO). Although Milo Ventimiglia eventually became known for his role in “This is Us,” there are those who will forever remember him as Jess Mariano from “Gilmore Girls.” Despite Netflix not revealing any plans for another season of “Gilmore Girls: A Year in the Life,” I’ll be hopeful. I simply must discover which of Rory’s boyfriends fathered her child, and to that end, I side with #TeamJess.

You can currently stream both versions of the popular show “Gilmore Girls” as well as its spinoff on Netflix. Make sure to consult the TV premiere schedule to help you decide when to indulge in your next marathon viewing session.
