'There's Nothing Romantic About It': Patrick John Flueger Unpacks Chicago P.D.'s Deadly Season 12 Twist And How He Wants Ruzek's Story To End

As a dedicated fan of Chicago P.D., I must say that the season 12 premiere was a rollercoaster ride that left me reeling, much like Ruzek himself! The sudden and shocking death of Emily Martel in the final moments was an unexpected twist that truly resonated with me, given my extensive background in watching cop shows where characters rarely meet their end so abruptly.

As a devoted gamer diving into Season 12 of Chicago P.D., I thought it was business as usual when we kicked off in the 2024 TV lineup. However, things took an unexpected turn at the season finale’s end. My long-time friend Ruzek’s colleague, Detective Emily Martel – a fresh face from Intelligence who joined after Upton’s exit during hiatus – was gunned down in a chilling cliffhanger. This left Ruzek completely thrown off balance. I recently chatted with Patrick John Flueger about this shocking turn of events and how the narrative unfolds for my character in the subsequent episode.

In my gaming world, the upcoming installment of “Chicago P.D.” titled “Blood Bleeds Blue” has me on edge. With Voight hinting at revenge in the trailer, it looks like Martel might not be healing up from that gunshot wound as quickly as we’d hoped. When I sat down for a chat with Patrick John Flueger before the new episode on October 2, he opened up about his reaction to learning Martel was shot.

I’ll tell you. The way that it was written in the script was that it was written almost as shocking as it happened on screen, if that makes sense. I definitely got done and was like [jaw drops]. I knew she wasn’t going to be on the show, but just the way that it [happened] was striking.

As a gamer, I was thrilled when Toya Turner’s Officer Kiana Cook got announced as the new regular for Season 12 of our favorite show. But just because Victoria Cartagena’s character Emily Martel might not stick around till the end of the premiere doesn’t mean it has to be a tragic goodbye. Flueger, who plays my fellow officer Ruzek, shared his excitement about this twist and hinted that he’d love to see something similar happen for Ruzek under the right circumstances. He put it like this:

Here’s one way to rephrase the given text in a more natural and easy-to-read manner:

Patrick John Flueger isn’t wishing for Ruzek’s character to be killed off on Chicago P.D., but if such an event were to occur, he would prefer it to be similar to Martel’s departure – sudden, emotional, and realistic. He further explained this sentiment.

I find myself moved by the stark reality of their daily lives – they’re here one minute, gone the next. They rise, lace up their shoes, head off to work, off to their jobs – much like I am about to, only instead, they step into the line of fire. The fact that death could claim them at any moment, simply because their job involves being targeted, leaves me in awe and stirs strong emotions within me. Speaking of it now brings tears to my eyes. It’s an insane situation, one that countless individuals face every day, and I commend the creators for shining a light on this harsh truth.

For over six seasons, Chicago P.D. avoided writing off any team members since the passing of Olinsky in Season 5 finale. However, the show delved back into that sorrowful event towards the end of Season 11 when Elias Koteas made a shocking return. In an interview with Patrick John Flueger, he discussed how Ruzek coped with Martel’s death in “Blood Bleeds Blue,” comparing it to his reactions following previous tragedies.

I think just the nature of it happening right in front of him. My favorite part is the call out. ‘Martel, Martel, you good?’ Because we do that all the time on this show, all the time. ‘Atwater, you good. Kev, you good?’ And you always get a response. It’s the first time in twelve seasons that I can remember anyway, certainly for him, that he doesn’t get a response. I just think that’s this wild wake up call.

Ruzek has experienced moments where his life and those closest to him have been at risk, but nothing jolts you like Martel getting unexpectedly shot right before your eyes. Moreover, there’s more to it. The actor emphasized this point.

He finds satisfaction in certain job aspects, particularly the intense firefights and the thrill they provide. However, despite being wounded and losing colleagues over time, he seems to maintain a sense of invulnerability. This feeling, I believe, has been a constant for him. But, in critical moments, this invincibility may dissipate, along with his awareness of those around him.

Based on Ruzek’s expression at the end of Season 12’s premiere (available for streaming with a Peacock subscription), it seems that the upcoming episode might prove challenging for him. Unfortunately, Burgess won’t be there to lend a hand, but fear not, Marina Squerciati will rejoin us. In the meantime, take a look at the promo to see what’s in store for Ruzek.

Don’t miss out! Tune in to NBC on Wednesday, October 2nd at 10:00 PM Eastern Time for a thrilling episode of “Chicago P.D.” Season 12, which continues after “Chicago Fire” at 9:00 PM ET and “Chicago Med” at 8:00 PM ET.
