As a seasoned gamer with a keen eye for movie trends, I must admit, the news about John Crowley directing “Five” has piqued my interest! With his impressive background in both film and theater, and having worked with some of the biggest names in the industry, it seems like this psychological thriller is in safe hands.
John Crowley, whose heart-wrenching romantic drama “We Live in Time” is captivating audiences during this year’s film festivals, has agreed to take the helm for “Five,” an upcoming psychological thriller that is being developed by TriStar Pictures.
Adam McKay, Kevin Messick, and Betsy Koch are overseeing this project under their company Hyperobject Industries. This venture brings them together again with Seth Reiss, who was a co-writer for the 2022 dark thriller “The Menu” that featured Ralph Fiennes and Anya Taylor-Joy.
The specifics of the storyline are being kept secret, but the production has been characterized as a two-person play similar to “All About Eve.” This iconic 1950 film featured Bette Davis and Anne Baxter and revolved around the complex relationship between a young actress and an established stage star. In “Five,” we follow a widow who develops an intense fascination with the leading lady of a solo play.
Reiss is set as the executive producer. The president of TriStar, Nicole Brown, along with Shary Shirazi, are taking care of the project within the studio.
John Crowley is a BAFTA-winning director from Ireland, known for his work in films and theater. He first made his mark with the crime anthology “Intermission” released in 2003, which was his feature debut. He received a BAFTA award for best director for his 2007 drama “Boy A,” featuring Andrew Garfield, and attracted attention from Hollywood with “Brooklyn,” a 2015 immigrant drama starring Saoirse Ronan. This film won a BAFTA for best British film and garnered three Oscar nominations. Other notable works include the adaptation of Donna Tartt’s novel, “The Goldfinch,” released in 2019 and starring Ansel Elgort and Nicole Kidman.
Andrew Garfield and Florence Pugh star in “We Live in Time,” a film that spans several decades, chronicling their love story. This movie made its debut at the Toronto International Film Festival and is set for a theatrical release by A24.
Crowley is repped by UTA and Brillstein Entertainment Partners.
