After Celebrimbor Called Sauron Out For Deceiving Himself On Rings Of Power, Charlie Vickers Told Me Why The Elf Was Right About His Character

As a long-time fan of J.R.R. Tolkien’s Middle-earth saga, I have eagerly anticipated Amazon’s adaptation of “The Rings of Power.” The second season has been a rollercoaster ride, but nothing quite prepared me for the shocking confrontation between Celebrimbor and Sauron in Episode 7. Charlie Vickers‘ portrayal of the villainous Sauron in this scene was masterful, capturing the essence of a being who is both powerful and deeply flawed.

Be warned: Major plot revelations from Episode 7 of ‘The Rings of Power’ are coming up. If you haven’t watched yet, catch it with your Amazon Prime subscription. Don’t forget to tune in for the finale on the 2024 TV calendar, airing this Thursday, October 3.

In this current storyline, Sauron has significantly elevated his strategies, masterfully deceiving Celebrimbor by concealing the true nature of the world, allowing him to forge the rings of power. However, the illusion shattered in Episode 7, and Charles Edwards’ elf character not only recognized the deception but also confronted Charlie Vickers’ character about it. When I had the chance to interview the actor portraying the antagonist from “Lord of the Rings”, I was curious to learn more about this pivotal moment and gain insight into Sauron’s thoughts during it.

In my initial round of interviews for Season 2 of “The Rings of Power,” I posed a question to the cast about which Lord of the Rings character they’d emulate if they were given the rings. They collectively suggested that the rings’ power would overtake them. Subsequently, as I watched Season 2, it became clear that no one could avoid the corrupting influence of the rings’ evil power. Even Sauron, the force behind their creation, is being controlled by them, and in Episode 7, Celebrimbor confronts him about this manipulation during a dialogue.

Celebrimbor: And after all that, you would still choose to inflict the same pain upon me?

Sauron: No. You chose it. Not I.

Celebrimbor: What?

Sauron: The outcome hinges upon those Rings, and since I was compelled by your stubbornness to create them through suffering, I find myself merely a casualty of your persistence. Yet, it is you who have authored your own pain.

Celebrimbor: You truly are The Great Deceiver. You can deceive even yourself.

Sauron: Finish them.

From a spectator’s perspective, I couldn’t help but be taken aback when Celebrimbor directly confronted Sauron. Interestingly enough, it seemed that the antagonist was also taken aback in my conversation with Charlie Vickers about Episode 7. He delved into the mental process behind his character’s reaction to being accused of self-deception, revealing:

Absolutely, when Sauron slays Celebrimbor, his behavior is uncharacteristically out of control. This rarely happens with him, making the scene quite impactful. It’s significant because Sauron, in his quest to control Middle-earth and maintain order, often becomes a slave to the very rings he created. This infuriates him greatly. Celebrimbor is particularly effective in provoking Sauron because his words strike a sensitive nerve. By trying to control everything, Sauron finds himself bound by the very things he has created, which is something that deeply upsets him. And when Celebrimbor knows he has nothing left to lose, he skillfully exploits this vulnerability of Sauron.

Galadriel And Elrond’s Kiss Shocked Rings Of Power Fans. Robert Aramayo Told Me Why He Did It, And It Makes Complete Sense

As a gamer deeply rooted in this fantasy world, I’m well aware of the looming climax in Sauron and Celebrimbor’s tale. Yet, when it comes to the smithy, he’s far from surrendering without a struggle. Armed with every resource at his disposal, he relentlessly chisels away, inflicting pain upon the deceitful being who has wronged him so cruelly.

In Episode 7, this particular scene showcases a remarkable instance. Once Edwards’ character comprehended the situation, he took every possible action to halt it. Despite lacking physical power, he exhibited intelligence by infiltrating Sauron’s mind and attempting to defeat him. Even though Celebrimbor was in a critical state compared to Sauron at the end of the episode – let me put it this way, he even amputated his own thumb – he still managed to inflict a significant blow on Sauron.

According to Vickers’ statement, it significantly affected his personality, exposing Sauron’s ultimate weakness. So, let’s ponder on what repercussions this may have for both characters in Episode 8.

Great news! The Season 2 finale of “The Rings of Power” premieres on Prime Video this coming Thursday, October 3. Don’t forget to tune in to catch how Celebrimbor and Sauron’s encounter might influence future events.
