Chicago Med's New Doctor Is Already Butting Heads In Season 10, And A 'Really Heartbreaking' Story Is Coming With An ER Alum

As a longtime fan of medical dramas, I was thrilled to see Sharif Atkins joining the cast of Chicago Med in its tenth season. Having spent five seasons on ER as Dr. Michael Gallant, Atkins brings a wealth of experience to the table and I can’t wait to see him cause some trouble for Dr. Frost in the upcoming episode.

As a die-hard fan, I couldn’t contain my excitement when I learned that Chicago Med swiftly set the stage in its 2024 TV lineup by shaking things up at the ED. The departure of two esteemed doctors and the arrival of two fresh faces was already a thrilling twist for Season 10‘s premiere. In the very next episode, the return of an old face from ER sent ripples throughout the series as it stirred up trouble for Dr. Frost (Darren Barnet). Sharif Atkins, who spent five seasons on NBC’s ER as Dr. Michael Gallant, recently shared with TopMob his reasons for joining Chicago Med and creating a bit of chaos for the new doctor.

In the second episode of Chicago Med, airing on October 2 (streamable via Peacock subscription after the Season 10 premiere), Sharif Atkins makes a guest appearance. This particular episode seems to disrupt the equilibrium established in the ED earlier, as suggested by the promotional footage. It appears that the peace won’t be restored in Episode 2, with a brief glimpse showing Atkins’ character physically engaging with Dr. Frost. Atkins discusses his upcoming role and the reasons behind accepting it.

It’s interesting playing the role of Joe Thomas, a father, married with a wonderful son. They learn after going in for what he believes is just a minor medical thing that their son’s cancer has resurfaced. [There’s] not only the heartbreak of learning about the cancer, but the heartbreak of believing they had beat it, because it was something he had struggled with previously. Just that story in and of itself, I was like, ‘Oh!’ To walk through that with some fantastic actors, Crystal Lee Brown and Kevin Chacon, it was really very profound, very profound.

On medical dramas like One Chicago, deep or profound moments frequently signify tragic events, and a positive resolution isn’t always a given (for instance, as seen on Chicago P.D.). Considering the punch shown in the promo, I mentioned to the ER veteran that it appears his character is headed for a challenging journey. Upon hearing this, Sharif Atkins chuckled and acknowledged that it seems so.

The situation becomes somewhat intense! In an engaging plotline, the parents and Dr. Frost, portrayed by Darren Barnet, find themselves at odds. From my perspective, it’s essentially a tale of determining the best way to care for our child. Dr. Frost advocates that our son should be provided with all the necessary information to make informed decisions about his health. On the other hand, his caring parents, including myself, prefer to keep him as optimistic as possible due to his diagnosis. This narrative is heart-wrenching, and this conflict truly escalates throughout the episode, reaching its zenith.

In summary, the storyline appears to be tense and emotional for any character on Chicago Med. Given that Dr. Frost is only joining the series for his second episode, I suspect his role might add an extra layer of complexity to the situation.

As I found myself joining the team in the latest season, it struck me that unlike my fellow doctors, Dr. Frost doesn’t seem to have a large circle of close friends at his side. Apparently, according to Sharif Atkins, this episode was filmed when Darren Barnet was still relatively new on the set of Med.

In simpler terms, when we started filming, he’d only recently arrived, just a few days off the proverbial bus. Yet, he blended in seamlessly, as if he had been on the show for years. His smoothness and empathy were such that one might assume he was a veteran, having been part of several seasons already.

Catch a glimpse of what awaits on Chicago Med, featuring Sharif Atkins, in the upcoming episode airing Wednesday, October 2 at 8 p.m. ET. To get a sneak peek into the second episode under the guidance of new showrunner Allen MacDonald, watch the promo video below:
