With A New 9-1-1 Spinoff In The Works For ABC, I'm Flashing Back To What Lone Star's EP Told Us About The Final Season

As a long-time fan of the heart-stopping drama that both 9-1-1 and 9-1-1: Lone Star bring to our screens, I can’t help but feel a mix of excitement and sadness as we approach the final season of Lone Star and the potential debut of another spinoff.

In the fall 2024 TV lineup, Primetime will be filled with excitement as both versions of 9-1-1 return to Fox and ABC respectively. However, the thrilling ride for Lone Star won’t last much longer, as it has been announced that the show will conclude after a 12-episode fifth and final season. Interestingly, another spinoff of 9-1-1 is in development to join the original series on ABC, bringing to mind Rashad Raisani’s comments about the end of Lone Star’s Season 5 as shared with TopMob.

9-1-1’s New Spinoff

The fact that Fox’s “9-1-1” series is coming to an end doesn’t necessarily mean that the ABC spin-off of the franchise won’t grow. In fact, a new show within the “9-1-1” universe is being developed for ABC, and two of the original series’ co-creators are involved in its development. Ryan Murphy recently announced this to Variety, stating:

Tim Minear and I are currently developing a fresh spinoff series which we’re in the process of writing. We aim to premiere it on television next fall. In a new location that I can’t disclose yet, but it promises excitement, we’ll be debuting a brand-new show. Interestingly, ‘9-1-1’ made its shift to ABC and quickly became the most-watched program on Thursday nights. Given their preference for such content, we’re eager to offer them another series that I hold dear.

Time will reveal which city Ryan Murphy was hinting at in his recent work, and I’m eager to discover if it will be more like the setting of 9-1-1 (Los Angeles) or Lone Star (Austin), making potential crossovers simpler since both shows were previously on Fox. Currently, they can be streamed with a Hulu subscription.

As a devoted fan, I can’t hide my mixed emotions about the current status of our anticipated project. Since it hasn’t been officially greenlit for production yet, we’ll just have to wait and see if it indeed graces our screens during primetime. The recent cancellation of “9-1-1: Lone Star” has left a bittersweet taste in my mouth, making me hopeful but also anxious about the future of this new project.

9-1-1: Lone Star Executive Producer On Season 5

In an interview with TopMob prior to the release of the fifth season, which marks the final installment, Rashad Raisani, co-showrunner and executive producer of “Lone Star”, hinted that there were signs pointing towards cancellation even before it was officially announced. Unfortunately, the production team only learned about the show’s termination after they had already completed filming for Season 5 without a main character returning, implying that the series finale, as we now know it, wasn’t initially intended to be the concluding chapter for Owen and his team.

I inquired about Raisani’s feelings of satisfaction regarding Season 5 being the conclusion for the Lone Star cast characters, although he didn’t plan it that way initially. He openly discussed this with me.

As a devoted fan, I am brimming with pride over this season’s performances. Each actor seemed to pour their heart and soul into every scene, resulting in an exceptional display of talent. Perhaps it was due to the extended time they spent together, or perhaps a deeper understanding of their characters that came with it, but they managed to create something truly captivating. The lengthy break between seasons allowed us to delve even deeper into these intricate characters, and I believe they reached a level of authenticity that is nothing short of breathtaking to witness.

Season 5 certainly got off to a thrilling start, and the first two episodes set up a massive train crisis while Owen is still struggling with choosing a replacement for Judd. Based on Rashad Raisani’s comments, those two episodes are only the beginning of a “beautiful” final season. He went on:

For each character, I’ve crafted an ending that I believe is both poetic and fitting. Regardless if it’s good or bad, they all conclude their stories honestly. As the series concludes, I imagine their journeys don’t end but continue – a possibility for future seasons should there be one. If not, I believe we’ve left each character in a place where I feel genuinely proud of their final destinations.

At this stage, it appears an eleventh-hour rescue might be a long shot, but there’s optimism that the series won’t wrap up by resolving every character’s arc. It’s possible some characters could move to the enigmatic location rumored for Ryan Murphy and Tim Minear’s potential ABC spinoff and become part of their cast. For now, I’m simply grateful to learn that the executive producer is satisfied with what is shaping up to be the final season of Lone Star.

Every Monday at 8 p.m. ET, I tune into Fox to catch the latest episodes of 9-1-1: Lone Star Season 5, with Rescue: HI-Surf following closely behind. On Thursdays at 8 p.m. ET, I switch over to ABC for a dose of season 8 of 9-1-1 and the bee-tastic action. After that, Doctor Odyssey and Grey’s Anatomy keep me hooked until 10 p.m. ET. When I need a rewatch, I can always find previous seasons of both shows on Hulu.
