How To Train Your Dragon Live-Action Gets Promising Update From Nick Frost

As a cinema enthusiast with over three decades of movie-going under my belt, I’ve seen my fair share of remakes and adaptations, some that left me wanting more, while others were downright disappointing. However, the upcoming live-action “How to Train Your Dragon” film seems to be bucking that trend, thanks in no small part to the talented cast and crew involved.

The live-action adaptation of “How to Train Your Dragon” is progressing well, and Nick Frost, one of the film’s actors, assures viewers that they will be pleased with the effort put into it. Mason Thames, known for his role in “The Black Phone,” will take on the character of Hiccup, the dragon-loving viking. In this live-action remake, Frost plays Gobber the Belch, a loyal friend and blacksmith to Hiccup, whose chemistry with him, both on screen and off, is evident. He’s excited for audiences to witness the exciting developments in the movie.

When speaking to Collider, Nick Frost couldn’t help but heap praise on his younger co-star during filming. He described watching him as “weird and funny” due to his unique physicality and comedic instincts. The actor added that Thames is a delightful individual as well.

We shared numerous scenes, and everything I did within those scenes that wasn’t written in the script didn’t bother him at all; instead, he appreciated it. He was always keen on improvising. We both enjoyed improvising together. I suggested, ‘Why don’t we give this a try?’ and his response was usually, ‘Sure, let’s do it!’

Unlike many other live-action remakes, the “How to Train Your Dragon” reboot enjoys a strong endorsement from its fan base. This is largely due to Dean DeBlois, who helmed the highly praised animated films, taking on the additional role of director for the new live-action adaptation. Apart from Cressida Cowell, no one knows “How to Train Your Dragon” better than DeBlois. During an interview, Frost discussed collaborating with the director on the live-action reimagining of his own animated creations.

100% in agreement! He’s simply delightful with his wit, intelligence, and charm. He exudes such confidence that it puts one at ease, making you think, “He’s got this. Take it easy. Just focus on your lines and enjoy the ride.” It’s comforting to know he has my back. And occasionally, he would check in, asking if I needed a drink or was okay. I’d assure him I was fine, but his concern and care for others are truly admirable.

The Live-Action How to Train Your Dragon Movie Is ‘Its Own Thing’

Besides Nick Frost, Mason Thames is also set to join forces with Gerard Butler (reprising his character from the animated films), and Nico Parker (known for her role in ‘The Last of Us’) as Astrid. In the animations, Astrid is Hiccup’s friend and eventually becomes his love interest. However, in the live-action adaptations, there might be changes to this dynamic, as Nico Parker has hinted that these movies will carve their own path, deviating from the narratives of the original animated series.

Parker believes it stands uniquely on its own, yet carries an essence of the enchantment found in this one too,” she explained. The up-and-coming actress further clarified that although the upcoming film is based on the same original content as the animated movies, creating a live-action version without introducing a fresh narrative would be fruitless. She added:

I believe it stands alone as a unique film, offering its own perspective on characters. It’s crucial to avoid becoming overly involved, particularly since the animated versions are exceptionally well-done. Essentially, let’s not aim for a direct reenactment. If someone desires that, they can always watch the animations instead.
