Joker: Folie Deux Director Addresses the Idea of a Harley Quinn Spin-off

Joker: Folie Deux Director Addresses the Idea of a Harley Quinn Spin-off

As a cinephile with over three decades of film-watching under my belt, I must say that Todd Phillips’ decision to steer clear of a Harley Quinn spin-off and any potential future Joker installments is a rather disheartening turn of events. Having witnessed the evolution of the DC Universe on the silver screen, I can’t help but feel a pang of disappointment at missing out on what could have been an intriguing chapter in the lives of these complex characters.

The director, Todd Phillips, who is responsible for one of the most eagerly awaited sequels this year, “Joker: Folie à Deux,” has unfortunately shattered the hopes of many fans. Despite the anticipated success of the Joker sequel, Phillips has no intentions of creating a standalone Harley Quinn film featuring [the character’s name]. However, it’s important to note that this doesn’t rule out the possibility of the spin-off happening. During a recent red-carpet event for the “Joker” follow-up this month, Phillips directly addressed the prospect of a potential spin-off in a straightforward conversation with Variety. Although he always viewed the Arthur Fleck story as a two-part series, he doesn’t see a need to delve any deeper into the storyline.

In my opinion, these two films seem to stand independently. I appreciate your attempt to discuss something further, but for now, let’s keep our conversation focused on these movies.

According to CBR, Lawrence Sher, who has worked on both Joker films and often collaborates with Todd Phillips, was asked about a potential Harley Quinn spin-off. His response didn’t seem very encouraging, and he essentially passed the responsibility to Warner Bros., saying, “Wow, that’s a question for Warner Bros.; you should ask them.” This comment follows the relatively cool response that Joker: Folie à Deux has received so far.

In my own words as a movie critic, I’d say: I, for one, have squashed the notion of a “Joker 3” sequel. Recalling my recent conversation with THR about a hypothetical third installment in the Joker universe, I made it clear that such a project is not on the table.

The direction this movie seems to be taking doesn’t quite resonate with me. To me, my connection to the DC Universe has been limited to those two films.

Although it might appear that a future crossover with another character would be a smart move based on potential ticket sales, it’s clear that the Joker movies by Phillips deviate from the typical structure and guidelines of most DC Universe films, which often seem overly focused on franchise requirements.

It remains uncertain if Warner Bros will initiate a campaign for Lady Gaga to win an award, but it appears that the roles of the Joker and Gotham City as portrayed by Phoenix and Phillips could reach their conclusion. There’s a possibility for a new director to take charge of a Harley Quinn spin-off, although it seems rather improbable given Lady Gaga’s commitment to the project based on the strong script written by Silver and Phillips. As Phillips put it:

“We only sent her half of the script initially, but she responded immediately with enthusiasm, praising it wholeheartedly. Later, I visited her home to discuss the remaining parts since we hadn’t finished writing it yet. Scott Silver and I are known for taking our time when it comes to writing.

In “Folie à Deux,” we find ourselves following Arthur Fleck, formerly known as Joker (Joaquin Phoenix), as he awaits trial for the actions portrayed in the previous film. While incarcerated at Arkham Asylum, Arthur encounters Harleen Quinzel (Lady Gaga) and forms a romantic connection with this enigmatic woman. This relationship rekindles the artistic spirit that had been hidden beneath his menacing grin.
