As a long-time NCIS fan who’s witnessed the rollercoaster ride of cast changes over the years, it’s heartening to see Pauley Perrette finding her peace and focusing on her well-being after leaving acting. Despite her departure from our screens, her impact as Abby Sciuto still lingers, and I can’t help but miss those quirky lab scenes.
Over the course of its 22-season span, the TV show NCIS has experienced a number of actors leaving the series. Some departures were permanent, but others have unexpectedly reappeared. Notably, Michael Weatherly made an appearance in the special episode honoring David McCallum and Ducky this past year. However, Pauley Perrette continues to express her reluctance about returning as Abby Sciuto, and she’s been keeping herself quite occupied since leaving acting altogether.
Among the original cast members, Patterson, known for her role on NCIS, joined the JAG spin-off through a backdoor pilot. She continued to be part of the CBS series until Season 15 ended. The reason behind Patterson’s departure from NCIS is said to involve tension with Mark Harmon; however, she has shown no signs of wanting to return since Harmon left his role.
After parting ways with my long-standing role on a procedural show, I didn’t wait long before landing the CBS sitcom, Broke. But when the series was unfortunately canceled after just one season, I found myself at a crossroads and chose to hang up my acting shoes for good. Though some fans may still dream of seeing me reprise my roles or return to the NCIS franchise, it’s now all in the rearview mirror for me, as I shared with HELLO! Magazine.
While I appreciate the advantages you’ve provided, I’ve evolved as an individual and wish to fully embrace this experience – the positive, negative, and challenging aspects alike. I aspire to remain true to myself at all times, which takes courage for me to admit, but it reflects my genuine feelings.

It appears that Perrette has undergone significant personal growth since departing from acting, and she’s thriving quite well in her current state.
Given the hardships she has faced recently, such as a stroke in 2021 and losing her father to COVID, it’s understandable that she’s prioritizing self-care and wellness now. While she appreciates the successes of her career, it appears she is currently finding contentment in life, which is most important.
Pauley Perrette hasn’t fully departed from the entertainment world; instead, she has transitioned into executive producing documentaries. Despite not intending to return to acting, she expresses a strong desire for authenticity in her work, stating that this medium allows her to focus on reality rather than fiction. As she put it, while acting provided an enjoyable escape, documentary production offers her the “authenticity” she’s always sought. It’s truly commendable, and although fans might hope for Abby Sciuto’s return following a subtle nod in the Ducky tribute episode, Perrette appears to be thriving in her current lifestyle.
Although she no longer acts, the actress maintains connections with her series and some of her fellow cast members. From time to time, she and Michael Weatherly offer mutual support – be it for a fresh project or a birthday celebration – which is heartwarming indeed. Furthermore, she honored David McCallum following his demise last year by paying tribute to him.
Currently, even though Perrette is not part of the NCIS cast anymore, viewers with a Paramount+ subscription can enjoy the first 15 seasons that feature her character Abby. It’s possible that in the future, Perrette might decide to rejoin the show, but as of now, there’s no sign that NCIS is wrapping up anytime soon. For now, it appears that she’s content with her current life, and we’re glad she’s happy!
