As a movie enthusiast who has spent countless nights huddled under the covers, peeking through my fingers during the most terrifying scenes of horror classics, I can confidently say that Robert Englund’s portrayal of Freddy Krueger has left an indelible mark on the genre. His performance in the original Nightmare on Elm Street series was nothing short of iconic, and his unique blend of menace and charisma made Freddy a villain for the ages.
Robert Englund, famous for his role as Freddy Krueger in the Nightmare on Elm Street series since the 1980s, has shared that there is only one unique way he could reprise his iconic horror character again. Contrary to expectations, this isn’t through a conventional return in an upcoming sequel or remake.
In a chat with Bloody Disgusting, actor Robert Englund discussed the upcoming anniversary release of a classic film directed by Wes Craven in 1984 – “A Nightmare on Elm Street.” This groundbreaking movie not only terrified audiences but also played a significant role in establishing New Line Cinema as a major movie studio. The film will be available for purchase in a 4K physical format starting October 15, alongside the existing digital version. During the interview, Englund delved into the film’s enduring legacy and Freddy Krueger’s position among horror icons. Naturally, he was asked about reprising his role as Krueger, to which he provided an intriguing response.
I no longer possess Freddy’s essence within me. However, it would be delightful to lend my voice to a sophisticated, animated character. Regarding the action sequences, I’m afraid I can only manage one take and angle now. I’m simply not agile enough for quick head movements or similar actions. After all, I’ve grown older, so let’s show some understanding.
Englund explains that he can no longer play the character due to his advanced age, stating, “At my age, I’m no longer able to perform physically in this way.
Despite his enthusiasm for rejoining the franchise, Englund prefers not to play the main antagonist who slaughters teenagers in terrifying realms. This suggestion, though it might seem like a direct appeal to fans, presents an intriguing perspective from Englund himself.
I’d be thrilled if they decide to make another Part 3 of ‘Dream Warriors’, as it’s my favorite film from the series. If given the chance, I’d enjoy portraying one of the doctors. The movie features the talented Priscilla Pointer, who played Amy Irving’s mother. I imagine taking on her role but as a skeptical male doctor, expressing my disbelief in the common dream demon everyone seems to be experiencing. This would be a playful nod to the audience, hinting that I don’t buy into this dream demon phenomenon. It’s quite common in remakes, especially with horror films, to give original actors a small cameo, so I believe this could add an interesting twist.
Could Anybody Else Play Freddy Krueger?
The idea of someone other than Englund slipping on the glove of Freddy is one that seems no closer to finding an answer. More than 14 years have passed since the remake of A Nightmare on Elm Street failed to live up to expectations, when Jackie Earle Haley tried his best to breathe life into the iconic character, but many things failed to work. With heavily criticized CGI and make-up effects that just didn’t live up to any of Englund’s iterations, the remake was not helped by a less than stunning script.
If “A Nightmare on Elm Street” is remade or a new sequel is created, the selection of Freddy Krueger should be impeccable. It doesn’t matter how often we imagine or Englund changes his mind about wearing the glove and Fedora once more; perhaps the solution might be something fans haven’t wanted to contemplate – that there may not be a need to resurrect Freddy Krueger at all.
Although it’s not a guaranteed success, many popular franchises have seen revitalization through successful animated adaptations, capturing new audiences and rejuvenating tired film series. The latest example is Terminator Zero, which was warmly received on Netflix last month. Given this trend, an animated version of A Nightmare on Elm Street could be a fresh and intriguing idea.
You can currently stream the original 1984 “A Nightmare on Elm Street” on Max. For those who prefer a 4K viewing experience, the digitally restored version is accessible right now. If you’d rather own a physical copy, it will be available for purchase starting October 15.
