As a long-time fan of Barry Sonnenfeld‘s work, I must say his new book, “Best Possible Place, Worst Possible Time,” sounds like a hilarious and enlightening read. The anecdotes about Will Smith and the Men in Black franchise are particularly intriguing, especially the story about Smith’s, shall we say, unique talent for producing certain smells.
This week sees the release of a new book by seasoned filmmaker Barry Sonnenfeld titled “Best Possible Place, Worst Possible Time“. The publishing house, Hachette Books, is generating excitement for this title with its promise of an “array” or “parade” of stories about Sonnenfeld’s various films and TV shows. These stories are described as being at times puzzling, frequently insightful, and always amusing.
In real life, Sonnenfeld shared some amusing stories during the promotional events, such as an embarrassing incident involving his well-known collaborator Will Smith. Sonnenfeld collaborated with Smith on several movies including the Men in Black series and Wild Wild West, and it was on the Men in Black set where Sonnenfeld claims an unusual situation occurred.
In a recent podcast interview, Sonnenfeld shared that they were preparing to film Will Smith and Tommy Lee Jones. Tommy, as you know, doesn’t tolerate foolishness, he explained. For this scene, both actors had to be placed in a car that transforms into a hypercar. They would then travel through the Midtown tunnel upside down. To accomplish this, they needed a mobile ladder, reminiscent of old-time airplane boarding from the runway. Once the actors were secured, they turned the vehicle upside down and prepared to take the shot.
In the 1997 version of the device, the actors were securely enclosed and fastened to prevent it from accidentally opening or falling out. According to Sonnenfeld, during filming, Will Smith supposedly said, “Oh, Jesus, I’m sorry. Tommy, I’m sorry. Baz, get the ladder.” To which Tommy reportedly responded, “That’s alright, Will. No worries, Will. Don’t worry, Will.
Sonnenfeld explained that they quickly moved a ladder to help the actors escape from the machine, while Jones hurriedly descended the stairs to exit. However, things took an unexpected turn when it was revealed that Will Smith has flatulence issues. As some people are prone to this, being enclosed in a tightly sealed small space with Will Smith’s gas is not desirable, let alone sharing the same confined space at the Disney ranch with him.
However, let me add this: We stayed off the stage for approximately three hours, which is quite remarkable. By the way, he’s a delightful individual, but he does pass gas occasionally. Not everyone does, some people don’t.
