As a seasoned gamer with a soft spot for anime adaptations, I must say I’m thrilled about the casting of Daniel Quinn-Toye as the lead in Amazon MGM’s Voltron. Despite his lack of film credits, his stage work and TV appearances have clearly caught the attention of some heavyweight producers.
Fresh face Daniel Quinn-Toye, who hasn’t yet accumulated any movie roles under his belt, has landed the leading part in the upcoming live-action film adaptation of ‘Voltron’, titled Voltron, produced by Amazon MGM with a substantial budget.
Filmmaker Rawson Marshall Thurber, known for the popular Netflix movie “Red Notice,” is overseeing the upcoming film adaptation, set to be filmed this autumn in Australia.
The following entities have a role in the production: Todd Lieberman (via Hidden Pictures), Bob Koplar (World Events Productions), Thurber, and David Hoberman (Hobie Films).
Voltron, or as it was originally known from its Japanese roots, either Beast King GoLion or Kikou Kantai Dairugger XV, was transformed into a syndicated television show in the 1980s under the title Voltron: Defender of the Universe. This series followed the story of five young pilots belonging to a unit called the Robot Lions. These vehicles, when combined, formed a colossal robot known as Voltron.
The specifics about the revised script’s storyline are still vague. Scott Thurber and Ellen Shanman penned the screenplay. However, it’s undeniable that this role could propel a budding actor into the spotlight, catching the attention of casting directors and industry producers alike.
Amazon, Thurber, and the producers carried out a comprehensive casting process for both the male and female leading roles in early and mid-September. Quinn-Toye was among four contenders shortlisted for the male part. (The female character, which saw three actresses trying out, is still undecided.)
Even though I don’t have any movie roles to my name yet, I’ve had the privilege of gracing TV screens. I snagged a credit in the BBC Three series titled “Badults.” Additionally, I was part of the background cast for an episode on “Outlander.” It’s been quite an exciting journey so far!
However, it was his stage performances that truly captured the attention of filmmakers. The 21-year-old actor, who studied at both London’s Academy of Music and Dramatic Arts and the Dance School of Scotland, served as an understudy to Tom Holland during his comeback to theater this past spring in the West End production of “Romeo and Juliet.” In addition to making his professional stage debut with the role of Paris, a suitor to Juliet, Quinn-Toye also appeared in various theater productions presented by LAMDA.
