As a seasoned cinema enthusiast who has witnessed the ebb and flow of Hollywood remakes for decades, I find myself both intrigued and saddened by the ongoing discourse surrounding Rachel Zegler‘s casting as Snow White.

In a recent conversation, the actress who will portray Snow White in Disney’s contentious live-action remake has revealed changes to her character’s origin story, including eliminating the “skin white as snow” line from the original 1937 animation. The debate about the dwarves and the stance of the two main actresses on the ongoing Israel-Palestine conflict is not new, but online criticism has focused on Zegler being cast in a role traditionally associated with a particular character’s skin color.

In a conversation with Variety, Zegler discussed how fundamentally, the character hasn’t been altered, and the remake is instead drawing inspiration from an earlier version of Snow White that predates Disney’s interpretation of the tale. Put simply, she stated that the remake looks back to a different portrayal of Snow White.

“It fell back to another version of Snow White that was told in history, where she survived a snowstorm that occurred when she was a baby, and so the king and queen decided to name her Snow White to remind her of her resilience. One of the core points in our film for any young woman or young person is remembering how strong you actually are.”

Rachel Zegler Has Been Forced to Defend her Casting in Snow White

In an occupation where actors frequently step into roles that are not their own, assume multiple identities, and convincingly alter their looks and personality, there’s been increasing debate over some performers taking on specific roles. Despite this being essentially an actor embodying a purely fictitious character, Rachel Zegler has successfully defended herself against numerous criticisms from online bullies regarding her casting in the upcoming Snow White.

In May, the actress marked her birthday by acknowledging the past year as one of the toughest in her life, expressing a desire for less fear concerning her safety in public spaces. Her statement read:

As I write, the door is closing on this challenging year 2022. What a tough time it has been! If you’ve spent any time online, you likely understand why. Despite everything, I am thankful for having discovered where my love truly resides and for welcoming a new furry friend into my life – my dog. Here’s to hoping that 2023 brings less hostility, fewer fears for personal safety in public places, and more compassion as we navigate through our lives together.

It’s clear that so far, no one has watched the movie Snow White. Instead, people are forming opinions based on its trailer and the lingering nostalgia many of us have due to the numerous remakes and reboots coming from Hollywood today. Whether their feelings change once the film is released in 2025 remains to be seen, but it’s likely that they won’t share any changes in opinion with others if they do happen.

Snow White
will arrive in cinemas on March 21, 2025.
