As a child of the ’80s and ’90s, I can vividly remember the countless hours spent playing Super Mario games, from the original to the many spin-offs that followed. The news about The Super Mario Bros. Movie 2 has me absolutely thrilled! Keegan-Michael Key’s teaser about new characters and Easter eggs makes me wonder if I’ll need a magnifying glass to catch them all.
The movie entitled “The Super Mario Bros.” broke records with its staggering global box office earnings of $1.36 billion, becoming the biggest hit of 2023 and setting a new standard for Illumination films. Given the enduring popularity of the beloved “Super Mario” franchise, this extraordinary success comes as no shock. Intriguingly, details about the upcoming sequel, titled “The Super Mario Bros. Movie 2,” have been unveiled by Keegan-Michael Key in an interview with Men’s Journal. The talented actor from “Key and Peele” shared that the sequel will delve deeper into the Mario brothers’ world, exploring captivating elements of lore drawn from classic games within the franchise.
It seems they’ve expanded the world where these characters reside significantly, introducing both familiar faces and lesser-known ones. These new characters promise to be quite intriguing given the current direction of the storyline.
Key, too, shared his enthusiasm for the upcoming batch of Easter eggs in the sequel, aiming to surpass the abundance of references found in “The Super Mario Bros. Movie“. It’s already been confirmed that Yoshi will first appear in the sequel, as hinted by the post-credits scene in the initial film.

The often-forgotten characters that we would love to see in the expansion include the likes of Oogtar, Professor E. Gadd, 6. Mushbert, and more. Clearly, there is plenty for the Super Mario Bros. 2 filmmakers to mine from.
Could it be possible that references might arise involving “Super Mario 64” featuring the terrifying Mad Piano or perhaps hints about the secret boss Culex from “Super Mario RPG”, which Nintendo has recently remastered? There’s also a chance we’ll spot Redneck Kong, a character exclusive to the select screen of “Diddy Kong Pilot”, replaced by Candy Kong in the game. Whatever new characters or elements they introduce to the cinematic universe of Mario and his allies, fans will undoubtedly be eager to witness their beloved childhood figures, adversaries included, brought to life on the big screen.
