Joe Dante And Gremlins Series Producers Talk Whether They Want To See Gizmo In Live-Action Again, And They Make Some Great Points

As a child of the ’80s, I can confidently say that Joe Dante’s Gremlins is one of my all-time favorite movies. So, when Max’s Gremlins series brought Mogwais to life in animated form last year, I was absolutely thrilled! Now, with the second season, titled The Wild Batch, gracing our screens this week, I couldn’t help but wonder if we might see a return of everyone’s favorite fuzzy creature, Gizmo, in live-action.

As a devoted admirer of Joe Dante’s timeless masterpiece, Gremlins, I was absolutely thrilled when Gizmo graced our screens through his own animated series last year. Now, as the second season of the captivating Gremlins series rolls out on Max this week, I found myself curious about the possibility of a new, live-action Gizmo in the making. So, I reached out to the creative minds behind the TV show’s production, including Dante himself, for their thoughts on such a development. Their responses were truly enlightening.

The Gremlins Producers Talk About Gizmo Returning To Live-Action

In a fresh twist for fans of the series, the upcoming season of Gremlins is called “The Wild Batch.” This title seems to be a nod to the hilarious sequel, “The New Batch,” released in 1990. Following the first season’s exploration of the Mowgai secrets through the story of Sam, a 10-year-old boy residing in East China during the 1920s, “The Wild Batch” finds Sam and his companions embarking on a new adventure in San Francisco, where they encounter more mischievous versions of Mogwais.

During discussions about the upcoming season, executive producer Brendan Hay expressed his preference for Gizmo and the Mogwai characters to continue in animated form, stating:

Personally, I find animation offers greater flexibility compared to live action, although it does come with its own set of challenges. For instance, as Joe [Dante] mentioned, working with puppets can be quite demanding due to technological limitations. Yet, even today, we’re still grappling with constraints such as budgeting for pencil mileage and ensuring the wellbeing of our artists and crew. However, animation provides us with a wider range of possibilities. For example, when it comes to creating mischievous Mogwai or endearing Gizmo, we have more freedom to explore various types of humor because we can express a lot more through animation than relying solely on acting in live action.

Conversely, the executive producer and showrunner Tze Chun offered a different viewpoint regarding the situation. Here’s what he expressed:

I’m game for anything related to Gremlins! Whether we produce our own or find existing materials, let’s dive in! Oh, and did you know that Warner Bros. had four distinct Batmen simultaneously? So, let’s embark on an adventure and explore everything there is!

Then, Hay found the concept of “competing Gizmos” quite entertaining, as Joe Dante put it.

Gizmo meets Batman, I can see it.

Sure thing!

The Gremlins Made Some Solid Points About The Present And Future Of Gizmo

Initially, I was curious about their thoughts since they’ve done an excellent job with the Gremlins spinoff. It sparked my interest in more classic-inspired animated series. Thus, I wanted to hear their perspective on potentially continuing the original version’s essence, considering their dedication to animating Gizmo. They all presented compelling arguments.

Hay had pointed out that creating a movie featuring puppet Mogwais isn’t an easy task. In fact, the initial film considered using monkeys initially to make things easier. However, over time, we’ve seen numerous friendly creatures from both fantasy and horror genres being brought to life in innovative ways, such as Grogu (also known as Baby Yoda) in ‘The Mandalorian’, which was achieved through puppetry and animatronics. So, it’s conceivable that an updated version could bring Gizmo into our world using similar methods. Although CGI is another option, it seems less appealing, doesn’t it?

According to the producers of the Gremlins series, it’s not necessary for the TV show to be the sole continuation of the franchise. They are content with sharing the character, should Warner Bros. choose to do so. After rekindling my affection for Gizmo in this series, I personally would welcome further adaptations. The Gremlins TV show serves as a gateway for such additional stories.

You can check out Gremlins: The New Batch on Max starting October 3.
