As a seasoned movie buff who’s seen more superhero flicks than I can count on one hand (and still have fingers left for popcorn), I must say the latest buzz surrounding Xolo Maridueña and his potential role in Marvel’s Nova series has me intrigued. The guy’s been a stalwart of the DCEU with his portrayal of Jaime Reyes, aka Blue Beetle, and now he might be swinging over to the MCU? That would be quite the superhero shuffle!
The downfall of DCEU has created numerous chances for actors who have worked with DC to switch allegiances to the Marvel Cinematic Universe. For instance, we’ve observed this happening with Henry Cavill, who made a brief appearance in Deadpool & Wolverine, portraying one of Wolverine’s numerous variations depicted in the movie. Even though DC leader James Gunn declared that Blue Beetle is part of his new universe and thus star Xolo Maridueña would be reprising his role, this might become challenging if the recent rumors about Maridueña and the Nova series are accurate.
Currently, there isn’t much known about ‘Nova’ beyond its development for Marvel, as it will not be a movie but rather a series set to premiere on Disney+. Moreover, Xolbin Maridueña has been added to the production list, although his casting is yet to be confirmed officially. With the conclusion of ‘Cobra Kai’ and the DCEU reboot, Maridueña will have more free time on his schedule, and if he is indeed cast in ‘Nova’, it would mark a unique milestone as this would be the first instance of an actor holding a leading role in both the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) and the DC Extended Universe (DCEU).
Despite the poor performance of “Blue Beetle” at the box office, there were several factors contributing to this outcome, with a significant one being the upcoming reboot of the universe, which caused audiences to lose interest in future DCEU releases following James Gunn’s takeover. Gunn has revealed that “Blue Beetle” will transition into his universe, but there are still many unanswered questions regarding its adaptation. Maridueña recently stated at the Saturn Awards in February 2024 that he anticipates reprising his character again.
As a fan, I firmly believe that Blue Beetle will reappear, whether it’s in Blue Beetle 2 or another format. It’s been a genuine pleasure collaborating with James [Gunn] and Peter [Safran], who have generously included us in their new universe, even though it wasn’t initially part of their plans. I feel truly honored by this opportunity. As for where Blue Beetle is heading in the future, I can’t say for certain. However, one thing I am sure of is that we will be seeing him again soon.
How Will Blue Beetle Move Forward?
The director of Blue Beetle, Angel Manuel Soto, emphasized that this character exists in both the old and new universes. Just as Amanda Waller and Peacemaker, portrayed by their respective actors, will reappear in Gunn’s universe, it’s possible that Blue Beetle could follow a similar path.
Soto stated, ‘We’re integral components of the universe, the world, and the future storylines being crafted for the upcoming DCU chapters. However, we aren’t bound by all the films that came before. While our movie shares the same universe with superheroes, it doesn’t necessarily adhere to events or connections from the past that might influence its direction.’
Should Maridueña be chosen for the lead role in ‘Nova’, it might complicate matters moving forward, as James Gunn has unveiled numerous projects within his universe, none of which include a live-action ‘Blue Beetle’ project at present. This flexibility allows Gunn to proceed without addressing any conflicting plans, potentially taking his work in various directions. However, if Maridueña joins the cast of ‘Nova’, this decision would simplify things for DC Studios since it could clarify Gunn’s future projects.
In the forthcoming second half of Season 6, set to stream on Netflix starting November 15, 2024, Xolo Maridueña will reappear in the Cobra Kai universe.
