The Simpsons Showrunner Says it Will Not Stop Doing its Longest Running Gag

The Simpsons Showrunner Says it Will Not Stop Doing its Longest Running Gag

As a longtime fan who has watched countless episodes of The Simpsons and laughed at every Homer-Bart choke gag, I can confidently say that this animated series continues to surprise me with its wit and humor. The latest season premiere, which features Homer choking Bart once again, is a testament to the show’s ability to poke fun at itself and keep viewers on their toes.

The ongoing joke where Homer Simpson chokes Bart in a comically violent manner on “The Simpsons” isn’t likely to stop soon, despite the show suggesting last season that it might. Fans of the long-running animated series are familiar with Homer’s less-than-perfect fathering and the amusing moments it produces. Some viewers thought this joke might be phased out following the show’s lighthearted mention of it.

In the third episode of Season 35 of “The Simpsons,” Homer made a remark after Bart gave him a firm handshake, saying, “See, Marge, choking the boy finally paid off. Just kidding, I don’t do that anymore. Times have changed.” This joke was discussed by showrunner Matt Selman, who considered it a “mistake” to include it in the first place due to its potential to be misinterpreted. While some viewers recognized it as a light-hearted comment on current comedy trends, the scene raised questions about the future of the Homer-Bart gag. According to Selman, the issue with the joke was that it seemed like an announcement rather than just a joke, and people misunderstood its intent. However, “The Simpsons” will continue to incorporate the Homer-Bart gag whenever it can be “funny or impactful,” as it is a fundamental part of the show’s character dynamics.

Worry not, for the newest season has resurrected Homer in a choking hold against Bart. In the world of The Simpsons, they tricked viewers into thinking the premiere was the series finale, but the key twist came when Bart mocked his father and Homer retaliated by strangling him. The funniest part of this whole ordeal is that they already made light of this situation last year. In November 2023, shortly after the episode aired, the official X/Twitter account for The Simpsons posted an image making fun of the notion they would stop having Homer strangle Bart. The caption read, “Homer Simpson was unavailable for comment as he was busy strangling Bart.” It seems this was not enough, as the season premiere and the showrunner still had to address the relatively small elephant in the room.

The majority of the commotion when Season 35’s joke was revealed stemmed from Disney owning The Simpsons following the acquisition of 20th Century Fox. To some viewers, it appeared as though the long-running series was trying to adapt by abandoning its traditional physical humor under new management. However, it has since been clarified that this was not the case. True to The Simpsons‘s style, the show has now made a significant focus of an episode in which Homer chokes Bart, serving as the main event for the 36th season premiere.
