When Ayushmann Khurrana got Karan Johar's landline number but was rejected over a call; 'We don't audition outsiders'

As a lifestyle expert, I find Ayushmann Khurrana’s journey in Bollywood to be nothing short of inspiring. His resilience and determination are truly commendable. Starting from humble beginnings as a radio jockey and video jockey, he bravely took on the challenge of breaking into the glamorous world of Bollywood.

Ayushmann Khurrana initially worked as a radio host and later moved into television hosting. Interestingly, this well-known actor first appeared in Bollywood with Shoojit Sircar’s film Vicky Donor in 2012 alongside newcomer Yami Gautam. Did you know that during his early career days, Ayushmann managed to get Karan Johar’s landline number? However, he received a rejection call from the team, who stated they do not audition unknown talents.

During Season 6 of Koffee With Karan, Ayushmann Khurrana discussed his past encounter with Karan Johar in 2007. Ayushmann explained that throughout his career, he has always felt like an “observer” within Bollywood. Reminiscing about their previous interview, the actor of Dream Girl 2 revealed that back then, he was a radio host.

40-year-old celebrity recollected requesting his phone number and informing renowned movie director about his acting ambitions. Ayushmann Khurrana disclosed that Karan Johar provided him with his landline number’s details.

The following morning, I reached out to Dharma Productions and asked if I could speak with Mr. Karan Johar. They replied that they do not typically hold auditions for external talent. This is what the actor from Vicky Donor shared during the talk show.

Afterward, Ayushmann swiftly switched the terminology to refer to them as “novices,” adding that Karan Johar’s Dharma Productions weren’t seeking out actors.

In 2004, I was the victorious contestant on MTV Roadies’ second season. After that, I appeared in various shows such as MTV Fully Faltoo Movies, Cheque De India, and Jaadoo Ek Baar. Following my acting debut with Vicky Donor, there were a string of films that didn’t fare well at the box office, including Nautanki Saala, Bewakoofiyaan, and Hawaizaada.

In a previous conversation with Forbes India, the actor opened up about encountering setbacks during the early stages of his professional journey. He emphasized that if one hasn’t encountered failures earlier in life, it can become challenging to handle them effectively as they progress through their career.

Among his films are Dum Laga Ke Haisha, Shubh Mangal Saavdhan, Article 15, Dream Girl, Anek, Bareilly Ki Barfi, Shubh Mangal Zyada Saavdhan, Chandigarh Kare Aashiqui, Doctor G, An Action Hero, and several others.

In the movie Dream Girl 2, which was released in 2023, Ayushmann Khurrana starred. The role of the female lead was played by Ananya Panday. This film served as a follow-up to the 2019 production, also titled Dream Girl.
