Ubisoft Spent About $800 Million On Skull And Bones, Insider Claims

As a gamer with over two decades of experience under my belt, I’ve seen games come and go, some leaving lasting impacts while others are quickly forgotten. The saga of Skull and Bones, however, is one that leaves me shaking my head in disbelief.

Story Highlights

  • Skull and Bones had been stuck in development hell for as long as one can remember.
  • After finally coming out earlier this year, the title has failed to live up to its hype.
  • As per a known source, it’s been reported that Ubisoft spent north of $650 million on the game.

Back in 2017 at E3, I was one of many, including grandmas, eagerly waiting for the unveiling of Skull and Bones by Ubisoft. The concept looked intriguing and fresh, but it turned out that there were some surprises down the line about the game. Delayed more than half a dozen times, Skull and Bones finally made its debut on February 16, 2024.

Upon its debut, I found myself utterly surprised that the game’s title didn’t resonate as expected with the gaming community before it even hit the shelves. In fact, Ubisoft swiftly slashed the price of their pirate action-adventure just three short weeks later. Here’s the kicker – something hard to swallow and teetering on the edge of disbelief: Reports suggest that Ubisoft invested a staggering $650-$800 million into Skull and Bones, can you imagine?

That’s a pretty wild figure for a game that’s lackluster on multiple fronts, but then again, take it with a grain of salt, because the information hasn’t been officially vetted. Endymion on YouTube claims to have a source in Ubisoft who’s spilled these internal beans for the YouTuber.

According to my sources, they’ve encountered numerous distinct iterations of the game throughout the years, each one being a unique take on its original form. They mentioned that the budget allocated for Skull and Bones varied between $650 million and $850 million over a decade. Unfortunately, Skull and Bones reportedly underperformed significantly for Ubisoft, which is said to be a primary factor behind their current financial struggles.

After the debut of Skull and Bones, I found myself drawn back into the original pirate adventure – Assassin’s Creed 4: Black Flag. It turned out that a lot more gamers were doing the same thing, as evidenced by the threefold increase in player count for Black Flag following the release of Skull and Bones. It seems players are eager to re-live the exceptional pirate experience they had with Black Flag once again.

yet relatively old) naval combat feels like.

In a critique, the eXputer assessed Ubisoft’s misstep, scoring it 3 out of 5 stars, and labeling it as “a less impressive version of Assassin’s Creed Black Flag“. It highlighted several issues, such as unengaging ground combat, mediocre voiceovers, weak gameplay dynamics, and repetitive gameplay.
