As a lifestyle expert reflecting on the life and career of Nutan Samarth Bahl, I am truly captivated by her resilience, talent, and indomitable spirit. Born into a family of artists, she faced numerous challenges that would have deterred many, yet she rose above them all to become one of Hindi cinema’s most revered actresses.

Discuss a renowned actress from Hindi cinema, who was a screen legend for almost four decades and appeared in over 80 films. She received many awards for her work. Notably, she faced a court case with her mother regarding financial mismanagement, and is the aunt of the gifted Kajol. However, her life took a sorrowful turn as she fought cancer before passing away after an impressive career. To add to her hardships, her husband died in a fire accident at their apartment in 2004.

Nutan Samarth Bahl is another name for her; a highly respected actress who made an unforgettable impact on Hindi films. Over almost four decades, she appeared in more than 80 movies and garnered numerous awards. Admired as one of the greatest actresses during her era, Nutan excelled at playing women-focused roles, bringing depth to intricate characters with ease. In acknowledgment of her significant role in Indian cinema, she received the Padma Shri in 1974 – the fourth-highest civilian honor given by India.

Nutan was born in Bombay to filmmaker Kumarsen Samarth and actress Shobhana Samarth, making her acting debut at the tender age of 14 with Hamari Beti (1950). Her exceptional talent was evident in films like Seema (1955), and it flourished further through memorable performances in Sujata, Bandini, Milan, Main Tulsi Tere Aangan Ki, and several other movies.

Growing up in a Marathi household as its oldest child alongside my actress sister Tanuja, brother Jaideep, and facing the hurdles of childhood insecurities, Nutan was my name. A harsh comment from a family friend about my looks once left me heartbroken. But my mother, Shobhana, comforted me with wise words, convincing me that what seemed like an ‘ugly duckling’ would one day become a ‘beautiful swan’. This encouragement bolstered Nutan’s self-assurance, fueling her determination to show those who doubted her wrong.

Although Nutan had impressive career accomplishments, her personal life was not free from scandal. Stories of an affair between her and actor Sanjeev Kumar surfaced during their projects together, culminating in a public altercation when she struck him on set following rumors of the liaison. In an open conversation with Stardust magazine in 1972, Nutan vehemently denied the allegations, expressing her disapproval of such baseless speculation.

In 1959, Nutan tied the knot with Naval Lt Commander Rajnish Bahl, and they were blessed with a son named Mohnish Bahl in 1961. Devoted to her family, Nutan chose to take a break from her acting pursuits following marriage, highlighting the significance she placed on nurturing family life.

Over time, her relationship with her family grew tense and eventually led to a lawsuit against her mother due to allegations of financial mismanagement. Later, Nutan admitted that making this legal move was difficult but crucial for securing the future of her family. This rift persisted for close to two decades, causing them to even avoid each other during flights.

Nutan’s health deteriorated following her breast cancer diagnosis, and as the illness advanced to her liver, she faced an increasingly tough battle. In her later years, she found comfort in spirituality and chose to retreat from public life. On February 21, 1991, after a valiant struggle against cancer, Nutan passed away.

2004 saw another tragic event unfold as Nutan’s penthouse in Colaba went up in flames, resulting in the death of her husband, Rajnish. Throughout her illustrious career, Nutan experienced moments of triumph and sorrow, ultimately becoming one of Hindi cinema’s most respected actresses, a legacy that endures.
