‘Princess Diaries 3’ Lands ‘Joy Ride’ Helmer Adele Lim as Director

As a fan who grew up with Mia Thermopolis and her royal adventures, I am absolutely thrilled about Disney’s decision to bring back The Princess Diaries! Adele Lim, a talented director with an impressive resume including Crazy Rich Asians and Raya and the Last Dragon, is set to take the helm.

Disney is returning to Genovia.

The studio is starting work on the next film in the growing-up movie franchise known as “The Princess Diaries.” Adele Lim, a screenwriter who has previously worked on “Crazy Rich Asians” and “Joy Ride,” will be taking charge of this upcoming project.

Anne Hathaway, who rose to fame with the success of the 2001 film and its 2004 sequel, is anticipated to reappear, but as of now, there’s no agreement finalized.

The studio is planning to shoot the feature next year.

As a devoted admirer of the original ‘Princess Diaries’, I’m thrilled to be involved in the creation of the third part of this cherished series,” Lim expressed. “We can’t wait to share its key themes of female strength, happiness, and guidance with audiences all around the globe.

Gary Marshall was the director of the initial film, based on Meg Cabot’s book, that followed a young character named Mia Thermopolis. Mia learns she is in line for the throne of a European country called Genovia. Her grandma, portrayed by the extraordinary Julie Andrews, is tasked with preparing this proper and regal teen for her new responsibilities. The movie starred Mandy Moore, Heather Matarazzo, Hector Elizondo, and others.

As a devoted admirer, I’m thrilled to share that Debra Martin Chase, a key figure in the original production, is making her return! Joining her are my fellow enthusiasts Naia Cucukov, Lim’s creative partner, and Melissa Stack, who also serves as an executive producer. We can’t wait to see what magical stories they will weave for us next!

Previously, Lim was part of Disney’s family due to her involvement in the 2021 animated film “Raya and the Last Dragon.” She honed her skills as a writer for television, contributing to shows such as “One Tree Hill,” “Life on Mars,” “Reign,” and “Lethal Weapon.” However, it was as a feature film writer, where she co-penned “Crazy Rich Asians” – the blockbuster hit that earned nearly $175 million in the U.S. in 2018 – that she truly made a significant impact on the big screen.

In the year 2023, her first directorial venture was launched with the road trip comedy titled “Joy Ride”, featuring Ashley Park and Stephanie Hsu as the leads. This production was under Point Grey Pictures, a company owned by Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg, and it hit the screens through Lionsgate.

Lim is repped by Paradigm and Ginsburg Daniels.
