Gael García Bernal and Diego Luna on Reuniting After a Decade For ‘La Máquina’: Now “We’re Better Actors”

As a seasoned gamer of cinematic experiences, I can confidently say that the upcoming series “La Máquina” starring Gael García Bernal and Diego Luna is shaping up to be an unmissable spectacle. The duo’s longstanding friendship and shared history on screen, coupled with their newfound maturity and wisdom, promises a rich and engaging narrative.

Longtime friends Gael García Bernal and Diego Luna, who have collaborated in the past on films like “Y Tu Mamá También” and “Rudo y Cursi”, are joining forces once again on the small screen after over a decade for their upcoming limited series “La Máquina”.

The pair initially dreamed up the project in 2010, featuring García Bernal portraying an elderly boxer (affectionately known as “La Máquina,” or “The Machine”), and Luna essaying his unconventional manager, striving for a final opportunity at a championship. From the start, they were clear about who would take on which role, with García Bernal jesting that Luna was never going to portray the athlete: “Come on, just look at him!” (paraphrased)

At the L.A. premiere on Thursday, Gael García Bernal told The Hollywood Reporter, “Collaborating once more at this point in our careers is becoming increasingly rewarding – it’s becoming more intricate, more lovely, more captivating, warmer and smarter, and hopefully even better.” He continued, “We work well together, we complement each other. It’s different now because it feels more comprehensive, more complete.

Luna, who undergoes a significant physical change in the series due to extensive prosthetics, reflected on their partnership, “Now that we have families and have grown older, we’ve become wiser and more mature. I believe our acting skills have improved, making this collaboration even more effective than before.

Speaking further, he mentioned that this time around, they are taking the lead as executive producers. Previously, we received a call; now, we’re the ones making the calls. It’s been an enjoyable trip, he said. We’ve often discussed the day when we would be the ones shaping the narrative. This story embodies our thoughts and concerns, everything we wanted to ponder upon is reflected here.

The venture simultaneously marks Hulu’s inaugural original Spanish production, providing an authentic portrayal of the Mexican boxing community.

Luna expressed her gratitude that they waited for us, but also hinted at a preference for them to proceed one after another in the future. It just feels like the perfect moment for the project’s start,” Luna said, appreciatively acknowledging both Hulu and Searchlight for the independence and backing they’ve provided the series.

Gael Garcia Bernal mentioned furthermore that, beyond the Spanish connection, both actors were enthusiastic about the “unconventional madness” they sought to portray. He explained that the narrative is not a conventional tale, instead it’s filled with unexpected twists and turns, which he appreciates as it challenges the traditional storyline of boxing. Moreover, Mexico has a strong culture around boxing, being our most celebrated sport, so they wanted to narrate that unique story.

La Máquina, which also stars Eiza González, premieres on Hulu on Wednesday.
