As a longtime fan of John Amos’ incredible work in “Good Times” and beyond, I am deeply saddened by the news of his passing. His talent and warmth touched countless hearts, and his legacy will continue to live on through his remarkable body of work.
According to various news sources, who obtained John Amos’s death certificate, the beloved “Good Times” actor passed away from congestive heart failure approximately six weeks ago at an Inglewood, California hospital. This was following a difficult period during which his two adult children were embroiled in a disagreement over his care.
According to both people’s accounts and TMZ reports, Amos is confirmed to have passed away on August 21 at 5:18 PM. Remarkably, there were no other substantial health issues that led to his demise; an autopsy was not necessary as indicated in the death certificate.
Nine days following his demise on August 30th, the remains of the lead actor from the popular 1970s sitcom were cremated. His son, Kelly Christopher “K.C.” Amos, was the one who reported his death to Los Angeles County and is also listed as the place where his ashes will be kept, which was the late actor’s final resting place.
As a gamer, I’d put it like this: “My dad, the kindest soul with a heart pure as gold, was adored globally. To many, he was more than just an actor on TV, he was their virtual father. He lived a fulfilling life, and his impact will continue through his exceptional performances in movies and television.
It wasn’t until this past Tuesday that the news broke about the passing of elder Amos, which was when his daughter, Shannon Amos, discovered it herself through the media. In a post on her Instagram account, she expressed her grief and confusion, saying: “We are heartbroken and left with numerous unanswered questions about how this happened 45 days ago, as we found out about it just like you did via the media.
In the last years of Amos’ life, a bitter feud among Amos’ children marked the family as they contested over their father’s care and inheritance. Specifically, Amos’ daughter Shannon publicly accused her brother K.C. of elder abuse. She alleged to authorities in New Jersey and Colorado that over time, her brother gained control over their father’s life and decisions, alienating him from close family members like grandchildren, nieces, and longtime friends. According to Shannon, K.C. even pretended to be their dad in communications, neglected his health needs, mismanaged finances, and abused, weakened, and tarnished their father’s legacy.
In April, the investigation launched by the LAPD concerning Shannon’s allegations was closed.
K.C. refutes all these accusations and told The Hollywood Reporter that his sister was on a complex mission to tarnish his reputation, aiming to make him appear “unsuitable.” On the other hand, the older Amos stated in a statement previously released to People that the allegations of elder abuse are baseless and undeserved, describing his son as a compassionate individual who highly values him. In appreciation of the Los Angeles police, the Good Times star hinted that he and K.C. were collaborating on a documentary intended to reveal the genuine truth behind the portrayal of him by those who have created a misleading narrative about him.
This week, Belinda Foster, a long-standing public representative of the actor, issued a statement denying allegations that K.C. had been mistreating his father. Additionally, Foster was mentioned in a statement on Facebook shared by several family members expressing their doubts about K.C.’s father’s wellbeing.
For more than three decades, I served as John Amos’ official publicist,” Foster stated in a message to People magazine. “Both the media and John’s professional agencies are aware of this. Over time, our bond grew beyond professional, becoming almost like family. In recent years, he frequently referred to me as his ‘daughter.’ This was not a deception on John, K.C., or my part. He considered me like a daughter to him. I deeply grieve his passing.
Contrary to Shannon’s assertions, there were no signs of abuse in John’s case as we, K.C., Eugene, and many others who looked after him can attest. On multiple instances when Shannon alleged that he was abused, the relevant law enforcement officials verified his safety by speaking with him directly.
Foster further tackled the allegations that K.C. didn’t inform Shannon about their father’s passing, bringing up the subject of a restraining order.
When John sadly passed away, K.C. was under a court-imposed restriction not to contact him due to a lawsuit brought by his sister Shannon in 2023. As part of his bail conditions, K.C. was prohibited from reaching out to Shannon through any means, including phone calls, social media, or indirect communication. Prior to his death, John was worried that Shannon might exploit his passing and burial, much like she had with other parts of his life.
Foster mentioned that it was actually John himself who asked for a postponement in revealing his passing to Shannon and everyone else globally,” (paraphrased)
