In essence, every movie, regardless of its complexity or grandeur, is essentially conveying a fundamental tale about the human experience. For instance, “Titanic” can be seen as an Aristotelian comedy that portrays Rose’s journey overcoming her own flaw. “Casablanca,” on the other hand, offers a heart-wrenching account of love and sacrifice. Even the most intricate stories by filmmakers like Christopher Nolan can ultimately be traced back to relatable themes. His latest mind-bending movie, “Tenet,” is actually about an agent trying to save the world from a disillusioned savior, using time travel as a backdrop. This week’s indie release, a thriller, might remind you of the John David Washington starrer in its own unique and exhilarating way.

However, in the story “Things Will Be Different“, an ordinary-looking house hidden away in a quiet countryside community is where we meet the enigmatic duo named Sidney (Riley Dandy) and Joseph (Adam David Thompson). At first, this house appears unremarkable. But things get peculiar when they become excessively defensive about the property, even going so far as to fire their guns to deter casual visitors hanging around their yard.
After making sure no one was around, the two individuals transformed the vacant-looking house into their workspace, and what follows could leave you puzzled. The dialogues between them unveil that Sidney and Joseph are long-lost siblings, but initially, they engage in peculiar household tasks such as winding specific grandfather clocks. Director Felker, making his feature directorial debut, seems to be aiming for a discerning film audience, so it’s advisable to pay close attention to their actions, even during cheerful montages that hint at skipped moments of time while they lay low and wait for further instructions from their mysterious employer.
If it seems like you’ll merely observe a tense standoff between them, unsure of what will unfold in this enigmatic safe house, hold on tight. Before the tension escalates, the intricate plot is rich with intense conversations between the siblings. Their complex past suggests strained relationships that may have been further complicated by their individual life choices and questionable professions. However, they’ve come together for this risky endeavor.

As Joseph and Sidney appear to be healing old wounds, enjoying their common appreciation for fine liquors stored in their hideout, suddenly, the situation takes an unexpected turn – not literally tearing anything, but metaphorically speaking. Once they decide it’s time to move forward, they delve deeper into the property, only to uncover hints that suggest a hidden observer is watching them closely.
What secret is it that he’s concealing from his sister, since he hasn’t revealed everything about the job they were involved in?
Things Will Stick With You
After watching “Things Will Be Different,” you might find yourself eager for another viewing right away – instead of wanting to forget about it for a while like some other films. Watch it with your science fiction enthusiast friends, and there’s a strong chance a lively discussion about the plot unfolds as the movie ends, as different interpretations emerge. The director skillfully blends various exciting film genres into the narrative, such as intricate neo-noir, suspenseful thrillers, action-packed shootouts, and more.
In essence, watching “Things Will Be Different” was reminiscent of viewing “Civil War,” not for its action sequences, but as a delightful finishing touch in the third act. Are they relatives? Alternate versions of themselves? Manifestations born from someone’s distorted mind?
