Sam Raimi Rumored for Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness Sequel

Sam Raimi Rumored for Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness Sequel

As a movie lover who has witnessed the evolution of superhero films over the past couple of decades, I must say that the potential return of Sam Raimi to the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) is an intriguing prospect. With his unique directing style and knack for blending horror elements into action-packed narratives, as demonstrated in the original “Evil Dead” trilogy and “Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness,” Raimi has proven himself to be a master at crafting visually stunning and thrilling stories.

In a potential turn of events, it’s rumored that Benedict Cumberbatch’s cherished Master of the Mystic Arts might again fall under the direction of Sam Raimi. As reported by Hollywood insider Jeff Sneider, Raimi (who directed Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness) is close to finalizing a deal for the long-awaited Doctor Strange 3 (as per CBR). It’s crucial to note that this unverified information, initially posted on The InSneider’s official website, should be regarded as a rumor until officially confirmed by either Marvel Studios or the sequel team. Sneider hints at this news in an attempt to attract more subscribers.

In tonight’s newsletter, you’ll read about Sam Raimi’s return to the MCU.

Sam Raimi is mainly recognized for pitting Bruce Campbell’s character Ash Williams against the eerie and spectral forces of the Necronomicon Ex-Mortis in the original Evil Dead, Evil Dead 2, and Army of Darkness . Before his “groovy” hero embarked on a chainsaw-wielding journey on STARZ, Raimi directed his first Marvel Cinematic Universe film, Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, having previously been the director for the Tobey Maguire-led Spider-Man trilogy from 2002 to 2007. This means Raimi has a wealth of experience when it comes to Marvel productions.

As a movie enthusiast, I’ve been quite captivated by both Spider-Man (90%) and Spider-Man 2 (93%), which have been highly praised by critics on Rotten Tomatoes. However, their successors, Spider-Man 3 and Doctor Strange 2, have received a fair amount of negative reviews. The last film in Raimi’s Spider-Man series, unfortunately, only managed a 63% score on the RT Tomatometer. On the other hand, Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness scored slightly higher with a 74%. So, if Sam Raimi is considering returning to the Marvel Cinematic Universe, one might wonder whether it’s going to be another triumph or a repeat of the past?

Doctor Strange 2 Won Over Most Fans Despite Critics

In a departure from Sam Raimi’s top-tier films, “Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness” didn’t fare well with some film critics. However, despite these mixed reviews, the movie managed to earn close to $1 billion at the global box office. Raimi’s entry into the Marvel Cinematic Universe amassed a domestic total of $411.3 million and an international sum of $544.4 million, culminating in a worldwide gross of $955.8 million, as reported by Box Office Mojo. Thus, it appears that the majority of viewers appreciated Raimi’s “Multiverse of Madness”.

The audience rating for Doctor Strange 2’s Popcornmeter, previously known as the Rotten Tomatoes audience score, matches closely with the original Doctor Strange (2016) at 86%. Additionally, the “B+” CinemaScore for The Multiverse of Madness also bodes well for director Raimi. This suggests that if Raimi finalizes the deal as Jeff Sneider claims, there’s much to look forward to. Notably, Raimi only agrees to direct sequels when there’s a compelling story to tell, which is why his Spider-Man 4 didn’t materialize in the past. As reported by Variety, Raimi himself explained this in an interview:

Instead of creating yet another piece that would mostly function, I set myself an exceptionally high bar in terms of quality. Frankly, I wasn’t confident I could elevate the script to the level I aspired for…

Benedict Cumberbatch, who plays Doctor Strange, hasn’t given any hints about whether Stephen Strange will star in another solo movie before or after the upcoming Avengers films, “Avengers: Doomsday” and “Avengers: Secret Wars.” On a podcast called “Bingeworthy TV,” he said, “I know no more than you.” Until an official announcement is made, fans can only look forward to other movies directed by Sam Raimi in the meantime.

At present, you can stream “Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness” in an IMAX-enhanced version on Disney+.
