Crank 3 With Jason Statham Will Only Happen if They Meet Directors 'F*cked Up' Conditions

As a critic who has spent decades immersed in the world of action cinema, I can confidently say that the prospect of Jason Statham reprising his roles in both “Crank” and “The Beekeeper” franchises is nothing short of exhilarating. The raw energy and unapologetic bravado that Statham brings to these characters is a breath of fresh air in an increasingly sanitized Hollywood landscape.

Despite being widely adored as today’s top action star, there’s speculation about whether fans will get another chance to see him reprise his lesser-known role: Chev Chelios. The main character in the franchise, talks about a third film have been scarce, despite The Stath’s popularity. Director Brian Taylor once hinted at a troubling reason behind this potential delay.

During a conversation with The Movie Crypt podcast in 2018, Crank and co-director Brian Taylor shared their conditions for Mark Neveldine, Jason Statham, and themselves to reprise their roles for the third installment of the series. Given these requirements, it’s not surprising that the studio hasn’t given the go-ahead just yet.

My thoughts on Crank 3 revolve around the idea that it needs to be significantly more outrageous than Crank 2, mirroring the escalation from Crank 1 to Crank 2. While discussions about it have occasionally surfaced, I’ve never felt that the creative direction has been edgy or extreme enough to truly capture my vision. The studio often approaches us with ideas: “What do you think about this?” or “What do you think about that?”, but the suggestions are usually quite mild compared to what I believe is necessary for the franchise.

It’s clear that there’s a fantastic film hidden within this project. I’m not sure if it will feature Jason Statham in a wheelchair, decades from now, but the idea of a “Crank” cinematic universe intrigues me. Not just one movie, but several, maybe? At present, there are no plans in motion. However, you never know what the future holds for us and [co-director Mark Neveldine]. We’re bonded for life.

Originally released in 2006, the initial film titled “Crank” introduces us to Statham’s character, a ruthless assassin who must keep his adrenaline pumping at all costs or face death after receiving a lethal synthetic drug. The second installment, “Crank: High Voltage,” continues the story (with even more intense violence and peculiar events) as Chelios’ heart is replaced with an artificial one. While the first film was highly acclaimed by both critics and audiences for its rapid pace and gritty style, the sequel didn’t quite measure up. Nevertheless, fans eagerly await a potential return of Statham to this action-packed series, although they’ll need to figure out how Chelios managed to survive being set ablaze first.

Jason Statham Fans Want the Action Star Back for The Beekeeper 2

Despite The Stath not reprising his role in the heart-pounding universe of “Crank”, the action star might be embarking on another franchise following the massive popularity of this year’s release. Released in January, the film had spectators talking, as it stars Statham as the enigmatic Adam Clay, a beekeeper who, after losing a cherished friend to deceit, abandons his tranquil beekeeping life and embarks on a merciless quest for vengeance. As is frequently the case, Adam Clay turns out to be more than just a peaceful beekeeper. With a deep affection for honey, this enigmatic man had previously worked for a secretive organization fittingly named The Beekeepers (don’t delve too deeply into it; simply accept it). He will leverage his unique abilities honed within that organization to bring the perpetrators to justice.

Although an official announcement about “The Beekeeper 2” hasn’t been made yet, given the first movie’s financial, critical, and streaming success, it seems almost certain. Director David Ayer hinted at a potential sequel, suggesting that if it moves forward, we can expect to explore the intricate mythology of the beekeepers in greater depth.

Indeed, I share your intrigue about the beekeepers’ mythology. We’ve peeked inside a bit and marveled at their skills. Yet, our curiosity is just getting started – who are they, where did they originate, and what lies ahead for them? And, who is this Jason in relation to them? There’s so much more to uncover, and working with Jason again seems like another captivating adventure.

Jason Statham will carry on his action-packed career as an iconic hero in David Ayer’s movie titled “Levon’s Trade“, set to hit the big screen through Amazon MGM Studios on January 17, 2025.
