Currently, Coppola is still recovering from the harsh criticism and poor reception that his movie, “Megalopolis,” has received from critics and audiences alike, as well as its disappointing box office performance – a situation that he likely understands Phillips is experiencing with his “Joker” sequel.
The movie “Joker: Folie à Deux” is predicted to have a modest opening weekend at the box office, but its prospects for true success have been dampened due to a lukewarm reception from initial viewers. This has become more problematic as the film received the lowest CinemaScore ever for a comic book movie, further exacerbating its poor Rotten Tomatoes ratings (now nearly 30% for both critics and audiences). However, it seems that the film has Francis Ford Coppola on its side, as he expressed his admiration for Phillips’ work on his Instagram account. He stated:

The movie has been categorized as a musical right from the start, but this classification brings to mind upbeat musicals like The Greatest Showman. It appears that the experience audiences expected when they went to the cinema was quite different from what they got.
It’s not surprising that Francis Ford Coppola understands Phillips’ efforts, considering the varied responses to “Megalopolis.” After all, Coppola is someone who’s well-versed in such matters. Given that Phillips has already taken a fresh approach with his comic book movie, much like Matt Reeves did with the Batman universe (as seen in Joker and The Batman), it makes sense that he’s not just aiming for a carbon copy, but rather seeking to develop and grow beyond the original film.
In many instances, people wondered if another Joker story needed to be told, given that the initial film provided an unprecedented, standalone psychological portrayal of one of comics’ most iconic villains.
