As a dedicated fan of true crime narratives and a connoisseur of Ryan Murphy’s gripping storytelling, I am thrilled by the prospect of a continuation of “Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story.” The first season was an immersive journey into the dark world of Jeffrey Dahmer, and I eagerly anticipated the second installment.
Creator Ryan Murphy hinted at a potential expansion of the Netflix series “Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story” following the announcement of a fresh court hearing. Notably, “Monsters” is an anthology series developed by Ryan Murphy and Ian Brennan. The initial season, titled “Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story,” or simply “DAHMER,” premiered in 2022, delving into the horrific murders carried out by Jeffrey Dahmer (portrayed by Evan Peters) between 1978 and 1991.
In the second part of this series, we delve into the sensational Beverly Hills murder case involving the Menendez family. This gripping tale of real-life crime focuses on brothers Lyle and Erik Menendez, who were found guilty of killing their parents in 1989. Over three decades ago, they were both given sentences for first-degree murder, with no chance of parole. Now, fresh evidence might decide whether these brothers continue to serve life imprisonment.
At a press conference, Los Angeles County District Attorney George Gascón stated that the legal team for the Menendez brothers has petitioned the court to overturn their conviction. After Gascón’s announcement, creator Ryan Murphy expressed enthusiasm about potentially producing additional episodes. The current season of Monsters consists of nine episodes. According to Murphy, the ultimate decision to extend the narrative series rests with actors Nicholas Alexander Chavez and Cooper Koch, who portray Lyle and Erik respectively. Murphy shared with Variety that this choice is ultimately up to the two stars.
If Nicholas and Cooper are open to the idea, I’d love to propose a potential continuation of our story in perhaps one or two more episodes.
New Evidence, New Era, New Documentary
New evidence was presented in a petition to the court. It includes a letter written by Erik Menendez that his attorneys says can corroborate the allegations that his father sexually abused him. Gascón said that he believes that the possibility of sexual assault would have been considered with more sensitivity had the case been tried in the modern era. The original trials were a media frenzy. The case captivated the nation in the 1990s. Stories and photos about the brothers were sensationalized, and the case circulated around the world. Now, thanks to the Netflix drama, it’s gone viral again, this time on social media.
Gascón affirmed that it was undeniable the brothers were responsible for the murders. However, he mentioned his team would be examining fresh evidence to determine if a retrial is justified based on the strength of this new evidence. A court hearing related to the case has been scheduled for November 29th, 2024. In response to the district attorney’s decision, Cliff Gardner – a lawyer representing the brothers – communicated his thoughts via an email to The Associated Press.
Considering our modern insights into how sexual and physical abuse affects children, regardless of their gender, and given the groundbreaking new evidence, we believe a reevaluation of their sentences is necessary. The brothers have already spent over three decades behind bars. We feel that this is sufficient.
Netflix has unveiled a new documentary titled “The Menendez Brothers“, set to debut on October 7th. This is the first time in years that Erik and Lyle Menendez will share their thoughts about the case personally. The documentary aims to tackle some of the criticisms, both online and from viewers, regarding the inaccurate portrayal of events in the series “Monsters“. It promises fresh insights and unique viewpoints. The documentary will incorporate new audio recordings from the Menendez brothers, their families, legal representatives, and journalists who have followed the case since its inception and throughout the years.
