However, sadly, an important character from the original movie passed away after a courageous fight against cancer. Yet, this loss won’t stop Smith from honoring the departed actress in a meaningful way – by casting her close friend and fellow actress, Sarah Michelle Gellar, to take on the role that the 90210 actress once played. Delightfully, Gellar has agreed to step into these shoes for this tribute.
After Smith discussed with The Hollywood Reporter about proposing Gellar for her friend’s role, the trade shared this news on their Instagram account, and “Buffy the Vampire Slayer” actress Gellar responded positively by saying, “‘On board’ with this idea!“. With Gellar now supportive of the plan, it would be exciting to see Smith manage to produce a sequel, offering fans a continuation and paying tribute to Doherty’s impact on the initial movie.

Despite earning only $2.1 million at the box office against a budget of $6.1 million, “Mallrats” has since gained cult status.

What could possibly improve this situation is if Shannen were still among us, carrying out our original plans.
