Nosferatu Remake Star Doug Jones Discusses Competing With Robert Eggers Reimagining

As a seasoned cinephile who has spent countless hours immersing myself in the dark and enchanting world of horror films, I can’t help but feel like a kid in a candy store with not one, but TWO upcoming Nosferatu remakes gracing our screens this year.

Actor Doug Jones, known for his roles in Star Trek, Pan’s Labyrinth, Hellboy, and The Shape of Water, expressed his opinions on the upcoming Nosferatu remake by Robert Eggers, which is set to premiere in December, during a promotion event for his own version of the film, Nosferatu: A Symphony of Horror, directed by David Lee Fisher and premiering on AppleTV on October 18. Interestingly, both films will be released just two months apart.

During an interview with Screen Rant, Jones discussed the timing of the movie release. He described it as a “perplexing period” to launch the film so close to when Eggers’ would be out, but he showed eagerness about watching Eggers’ movie and is highly anticipating the simultaneous release of the two Nosferatu films, stating:

I greatly admire Robert Eggers’ work, and I’m eagerly anticipating their upcoming film too. I believe Bill Skarsgård will do an outstanding job as well. Everyone has their unique take on the original story, and I hope fans will enjoy exploring various interpretations of Nosferatu’s legend. Here’s hoping there is a large enough audience to support all these different versions.

Jones didn’t seem to indicate a contest between the two projects other than audience excitement. With so many Dracula adaptations available this year, viewers are truly spoiled for choice, and perhaps Jones’ version will motivate fans to revisit the original silent movie as well as the two contemporary versions. The impact of their release timings on reception remains uncertain. Nosferatu: A Symphony of Horror, premiering closer to Halloween on streaming platforms, stands in contrast to Nosferatu, which will have a theatrical release on December 25th, making it an ideal Christmas present for horror enthusiasts.

Two New Takes on a Timeless Horror Classic

Two movies, one by Henrik Galeen and F.W. Murnau in 1922, are modern takes on the silent film “Nosferatu.” These films were inspired by Bram Stoker’s “Dracula,” focusing on a vampire-obsessed young woman and the undead Count Orlok. Since then, various remakes and adaptations have been made, with the latest being Fisher’s and Eggers’. Fisher’s “A Symphony of Horror” is a direct copy of the 1922 silent film, using green screen technology to overlay the original film’s background and CGI to include Jones and the rest of the cast. Essentially, Fisher is placing the new actors into the original movie. The remake combines old and modern sets, sound effects, and music.

In essence, Robert Eggers’ “Nosferatu” is a fresh take on the original film. The movie showcases Eggers’ knack for folklore, atmosphere, and dialogue fitting of the period, evident in his earlier works like “The Witch” (2015) and “The Lighthouse” (2019). Bill Skarsgård portrays the chilling vampire in this adaptation, blending classic elements with a contemporary twist to appeal to modern audiences.

The two actors selected for this year’s competing “Nosferato” movies are absolutely fitting for their roles. Jones, renowned for his portrayals of non-human beings and flexibility, is joined by Skarsgård, celebrated for his physicality and chilling roles in horror films. Skarsgård collaborates with Ella Puenell and Nicholas Hoult in the eagerly awaited sequel, where Hoult earlier praised Skarsgård’s portrayal of Count Orlok as both transformative and bone-chilling. We can hardly wait to witness how these films and performances enrich the classic gothic horror tale.
