Jason Bourne Star Reveals if They Will Return for the Next Sequel

As a movie critic who has been following the Bourne franchise since its inception, I must say that the news of a sixth installment brings a sense of nostalgia and anticipation. Matt Damon’s portrayal of Jason Bourne is iconic, and his continued involvement in the series is a testament to the character’s enduring appeal.

After the final installment in the Jason Bourne series came out in 2016, it seems the franchise might have ended. However, history shows that popular franchises often return, and by November 2023, there were rumblings of a sixth movie being developed. Matt Damon is expected to reprise his role as the main character, having been synonymous with the series except for one film where Jeremy Renner took over. While Damon will likely be back, it appears Julia Stiles won’t return to her role in the upcoming film, according to her statements.

In an interview with Screen Rant, the actress who played Nicky Parsons, a significant character in the original trilogy and who had personal connections to Damon’s amnesiac assassin, passed away in 2016’s Jason Bourne. She has largely rejected the idea of returning for further installments, but she doesn’t completely rule out being part of a prequel if one is ever produced.

It seems like we’re repeating a discussion from the past two decades! Each time feels like a replay of the same scene. I can’t help but feel bewildered, as if this is a prequel or a rerun of some sort. I guess it’s hard to explain.

Edward Berger has been appointed as the director for an upcoming sixth installment; however, specific details regarding the project are scarce at this time. Although it’s yet to be officially confirmed, there are expectations that Matt Damon will reprise his role in the movie, and he has praised Berger’s directing abilities. In a conversation back in February 2024, Damon shared his enthusiasm about potentially collaborating with Berger on this film.

Edward Berger is a remarkable film director who made the exceptional movie ‘All Quiet on the Western Front’. He has an idea for the Bourne series, and I’d be thrilled to collaborate with him. He’s currently working on it, and I share your eagerness to find out if this project comes to life. I hope it turns out fantastic, and if we get the chance, I believe it will.

Since 2002, Damon has been embodying his character, a tenure that outlasts Daniel Craig’s portrayal of James Bond if Damon appears in another movie. Recognizing the need for a fresh face, both Craig and the Bond producers sought a younger actor, a fact not lost on Damon either.

“At a certain point somebody is going to need to take it over. I’m not getting any younger.”

In 2012, the franchise attempted to continue its success with Jeremy Renner in “The Bourne Legacy,” but the movie didn’t resonate well with audiences as indicated by lower box office earnings compared to the previous installment featuring Matt Damon. The film grossed $276 million while the one starring Damon brought in a staggering $444 million. When Damon returned for the next film, it regained its momentum, earning $415 million. Interestingly, Renner’s movie was released in the same year as the first “Avengers” film, but it didn’t benefit from Renner’s association with the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Given a chance to redo things now, they might consider Jeremy Renner for the lead role. However, considering his age (53) and recent snowplow accident, it’s more probable that they’d look for a younger actor instead.
