As a long-time fan of the Tron franchise, it’s been a wild ride to see this series evolve over the years. From the original groundbreaking film to the visually stunning sequel, Tron: Legacy, and now with the upcoming release of Tron: Ares, I can’t help but feel like I’m part of some futuristic, digital family.
Discussing a classic for its outstanding music, captivating visuals, and being a follow-up to one of the greatest sci-fi movies ever made, Tron: Legacy, was launched in 2010 with an aim to introduce fresh viewers to the Grid. Although it received mixed reception initially, over time it built a dedicated fanbase. For years, there were whispers of a third installment, and now that dream is becoming reality as Tron: Ares. As we approach its premiere, Garret Hedlund, who starred in the original sequel, is sharing his thoughts on the first follow-up and his feelings about the upcoming movie.
It’s astonishing to think that over 14 years have passed since “Tron: Legacy” premiered on the big screen. Despite this time elapse, the impact (not a pun) of that movie remains potent, and Garret Hedlund, the actor who portrayed Sam Flynn, is well-aware of it. In a recent interview with Collider, Hedlund shared some heartwarming stories about his interactions with fans lately.
I find it quite intriguing to encounter a myriad of individuals, both young and old, who’ve just discovered Tron: Legacy in the past week. It’s been an ongoing joy to witness their fascination with its visual style, the universe it creates, and the tantalizing glimpse into a world like The Grid. It’s truly heartening to see such inspiration sparked in them. Kudos indeed to Joseph Kosinski for his masterful work on Tron: Legacy, as well as Steven Lisberger for the original Tron, both of which remain ahead of their time.
It’s lovely to learn that the star of “Country Song” is continuing to receive such warm affection for his sci-fi movie, which featured Jeff Bridges and Olivia Wilde alongside others. This certainly underscores the imaginative brilliance of director Joseph Kosinski. Moreover, the actor from “Tulsa King” expresses eagerness about the projects that Jared Leto and the cast of “Tron: Ares” are working on.
I can hardly contain my anticipation for the realization of Tron: Ares! I’m thrilled about what this development is going to mean, not just for the Tron community, but for The Grid as a whole. I know everyone has been putting in a tremendous effort behind the scenes, and it’s truly remarkable to see their hard work finally coming to fruition amidst all the challenges they’ve faced. Who knows? Perhaps this isn’t the last we’ll see of Sam and Quorra!
Disney has given occasional updates about the movie, but a lot of details are being concealed. However, we do know that Joachim Rønning is directing, with Jared Leto portraying the main character and Jeff Bridges reprising his role as Kevin Flynn. Additionally, there will likely be many unexpected twists, and it’s possible that Garrett Hedlund might return to play Sam.
With the Lightcycle Run ride (featuring Jared Leto) now active and a fresh movie on the horizon, enthusiasts of this series are undoubtedly getting their fill. It’s astounding that more than a decade after Legacy and years beyond the 1982 film, this intellectual property still possesses vitality.
The current state of the Tron universe is promising, and it’s heartening to witness its progress. It seems likely that Garrett Hedlund will continue to receive admiration for his role in the series, and I can only hope that he gets another opportunity to reprise his character and battle in the Grid at some point in the future.
In October 2025, you’ll have the opportunity to catch the new film “Tron: Ares” in theaters on its release date. Until then, enjoy the first two movies by streaming them through your Disney+ subscription.
