As a movie enthusiast with decades of experience under my belt, I must say that the recent turn of events for Warner Bros. has left me somewhat perplexed and concerned, much like Joker himself. The disappointing performance of Joker: Folie à Deux is certainly a blow to the DCU, and it’s hard not to draw parallels between this film and the infamous canceled Batgirl project.
Since its dismal opening weekend in cinemas, “Joker: Folie à Deux” has sparked intense discussions among DC Universe fans and critics on social media platforms. However, Todd Phillips’s follow-up movie is not the only film causing a stir online – the revival of the scrapped “Batgirl” movie has also gained traction, frequently resurfacing whenever Warner Bros. experiences a financial flop at the box office.
The movie titled “Batgirl,” featuring actress Leslie Grace from “In the Heights,” was unexpectedly canceled in August 2022 even after filming had been completed. This decision stirred up controversy and anger among DC Universe fans. Although it never made it to the big screen, “Batgirl” remains a symbol of Warner Bros.’s questionable decisions that have faced criticism. With the recent poor performance of “Joker: Folie à Deux” in cinemas, doubts about the future of Warner Bros. films have resurfaced among fans.
As a movie aficionado, I’ve noticed a striking contrast between the prospects of two upcoming films – Batgirl and Joker: Folie à Deux. While Batgirl seemed poised for success with its modest $90 million budget, an A-list cast featuring Brendan Fraser and Michael Keaton, and enticing sneak peeks showing off its impressive practical effects and costumes, Joker: Folie à Deux faced much steeper challenges even before hitting theaters. Reportedly made on a whopping $200 million budget, the film’s production was fraught with issues, such as Warner Bros. not conducting test screenings and openly admitting to rewriting the script on the fly during production. This has left many disenchanted DCU fans questioning the wisdom behind shelving promising projects like Batgirl while pouring millions more into bringing a seemingly haphazardly constructed story like Joker: Folie à Deux to the silver screen.
Warner Bros. May Be Heading for Trouble After Joker: Folie à Deu x Flop
Since its release a week ago, critics have heavily criticized the film “Joker: Folie à Deux”. Despite not being the worst Warner Bros. production (that title goes to “The Flash”), the highly anticipated movie earned only $40 million at the domestic box office, with global earnings of just $121 million. This disappointing performance comes during a challenging time for Warners, as their merger with Discovery has resulted in significant stock losses and debt. In essence, Warner Bros. urgently needs to produce a successful film.
Following the underwhelming performance of “Joker: Folie à Deux,” the bar for future Warner Bros. productions has never been higher. Despite speculations that “Batgirl” might be resurrected due to tax benefits earned by writing off the film, it’s more likely that we won’t see it again. However, there are some exciting projects on the horizon. For instance, “Superman” is set to hit theaters in July 2025, and Robert Pattinson is expected to continue his acclaimed portrayal of Batman in 2026.
