As a die-hard action fan who has seen my fair share of adrenaline-pumping films, I can confidently say that Sam Hargrave is the perfect choice to bring the iconic Shinobi universe to life on the big screen. With his background as a stuntman and his impressive directorial work on the Extraction movies, it’s clear that he has the skills and experience needed to deliver an action-packed spectacle that will satisfy fans of the series.
Filmmaker Sam Hargrave, known for his work in extraction, is venturing into the world of video games. He’s set to lead Universal’s adaptation of the Sega game series, Shinobi, a project that seems perfectly suited to showcase his skills in action-oriented storytelling.
1987 saw the introduction of this game in arcades, centering around the character of Joe Musashi, a contemporary ninja battling immense wickedness. Known for his transition from stuntman to sought-after director with the Netflix “Extraction” series, which were lauded for their original and intense action sequences, it’s not hard to envision Hargrave drawing his sword for this project.
The stealthy character known as Shinobi has given rise to a total of fourteen different games, racking up over 5 million sales. A fresh addition to the series is currently being developed.
As a passionate gaming enthusiast, I can’t help but marvel at the incredible achievements of Universal Studios and Blumhouse Productions in the realm of video game adaptations. The global box office success of “The Super Mario Bros. Movie,” raking in an astounding $1.4 billion, and “Five Nights at Freddy’s” surpassing $290 million, despite its simultaneous release on Peacock streaming service, is truly a testament to their prowess. Meanwhile, Sega and Paramount Pictures are also reaping the rewards of their successful collaboration on the “Sonic the Hedgehog Movies,” with another installment set to hit theaters in December.
Ken Kobayashi is set to write the screenplay for the movie titled “Shinobi“. The production will be handled by Marc Platt and Adam Siegel, under Marc Platt Productions. Additionally, Dmitri M. Johnson will take on his producing role via Story Kitchen. Lastly, Toru Nakahara will produce this project through SEGA.
In this arrangement, Mike Goldberg takes on the role of Executive Producer for the upcoming film. Timothy I. Stevenson joins him as a Co-Producer. Overseeing the project from Universal’s end will be Ryan Jones, their Senior Vice President of Production Development, along with Christine Sun, their Director of Production Development.
