Riley Keough on Her Final Memories of Mother Lisa Marie Presley: “The Moment My Brother Died, I Was Like, ‘This is the End of Her'”

As a fan who has followed the Presley family closely over the years, I must say that Riley Keough’s interview with Oprah Winfrey was nothing short of heart-wrenching. The way she spoke about her mother, Lisa Marie, and her relationship with Michael Jackson was profoundly moving. It’s clear that they shared a bond that was deeply rooted in love and kindness.

Actress Riley Keough recently opened up about her mother’s passing in a heartfelt interview with Oprah Winfrey, conducted at their family home Graceland, which was broadcast on CBS on October 8. This conversation coincided with the release of Lisa Marie Presley‘s posthumous memoir, “From Here to the Great Unknown.” As the sole child of rock legend Elvis Presley and Priscilla Presley, Lisa Marie passed away from a cardiac arrest at the age of 54 on January 12, 2023. In preparation for the book, Riley spent numerous hours listening to recordings her mother had made specifically for it prior to her untimely death.

During the television special “An Oprah Special: The Presleys – Elvis, Lisa Marie, and Riley,” Keough, Lisa Marie’s daughter with actor and musician Danny Keough, became emotional as she listened to recordings of her mother discussing her marriage to Michael Jackson (which lasted from 1994-1996).

She shared with Winfrey that during her interactions with Michael, she found him to be nothing but kind and affectionate towards her and her family. From what she observed, they appeared to have a genuinely loving and content relationship.

As a devoted fan, I can’t help but reflect on the life of Lisa Marie, a journey marked by poignant memories, particularly since her father’s untimely passing in 1977 when she was only nine. The recent news of her own passing, coming just two days after gracing the Golden Globes for the 2022 biopic ‘Elvis’, has left me deeply saddened. In the days preceding this event, I found myself worrying about her mother’s wellbeing.

Over the past three weeks before her passing, I found myself spending some time with her, which left me feeling uneasy. There was always this subtle sense of impending doom surrounding us due to my intuition about our dwindling time together. However, there were certain moments when she seemed distant – a quiet acceptance that struck me as resignation.

As Oprah Winfrey inquired if it seemed like my mother, who had briefly battled opioid addiction following the birth of Harper and Finley in 2008, was using drugs again, I responded, “It didn’t appear to be drug use. Given my background with substances, it felt more like exhaustion.

The idea of living on borrowed time with her mother originated from the tragic death of Lisa Marie’s son Benjamin, who was also Keough’s younger brother. In July 2020, Benjamin took his own life at the age of 27 using a gun. The memoir reveals that Lisa Marie kept Benjamin’s body in their home for weeks before eventually taking him to Graceland for burial, storing his remains with dry ice. Oprah Winfrey asked, “What did she do, she would just sit with the body?”, and Lisa Marie confirmed this was true.

When my brother passed away, I thought to myself, ‘This must be devastating for her,’ given how tightly knit they were. Their bond was similar to that between Elvis and his mother, and I struggled to conceive of a scenario in which she could carry on without him,” she reminisced.

Keough additionally shared her past resentment towards her grandfather, Elvis, as she observed her mother continuously grieving over his passing.

She expressed that her mother seemed hurt and bewildered by his departure, and this was something she carried with her. At a young age, she associated him with causing her mother distress, which left her feeling angry and upset when she was young.

One factor that complicates Keough’s connection with Graceland, the property she now owns entirely, is one of several reasons behind it.

She confessed that she typically dislikes visiting this place and feels compelled to come. However, upon arrival, she experiences a strong feeling of connection when she sits in the meditative garden.

Elvis, Ben (his sister), and Lisa Marie (his mother) are all interred in Graceland’s meditation garden, a place where Priscilla, his grandmother, has expressed her wish to be buried as well. Regarding the future of this popular tourist destination that welcomes over 2,000 visitors daily, Keough intends to uphold what she believes would have been Lisa Marie’s desires.

Keough stated that his natural inclination for everything is to maintain it as a home, a choice guided by what he believes his mother would have preferred. He considered it as our family’s abode.
