Bhool Bhulaiyaa 3 director Anees Bazmee reveals why he didn't take psychological thriller route like first part; 'Shifting the genre would be cheating…’

As a seasoned cinephile with decades of movie-watching under my belt, I find myself intrigued by the creative decisions behind the Bhool Bhulaiyaa franchise. Anees Bazmee’s choice to veer away from the psychological thriller route for the sequels and opt for horror-comedy instead was a daring move, but it seems to have paid off based on the anticipation surrounding Bhool Bhulaiyaa 3.

Discussion about Kartik Aaryan’s upcoming movie Bhool Bhulaiyaa 3 is heating up on social media now. This third film in the Bhool Bhulaiyaa series features Kartik Aaryan, Triptii Dimri, Vidya Balan, and Madhuri Dixit. In a recent interview, director Anees Bazmee acknowledged that the original Bhool Bhulaiyaa was exceptional, praising the work of Priyadarshan and Akshay Kumar in it. Consequently, he chose to make the sequels as horror-comedy rather than continuing with the psychological thriller format of the first film.

In a chat with Hindustan Times, director Anees Bazmee opened up about his decision to make Bhool Bhulaiyaa 2 and possibly 3. The question on everyone’s mind was why he opted for a horror-comedy instead of a psychological thriller like the original, which broke new ground in India and left fans amazed.

In his response, the director shared that just like the second movie, Bhool Bhulaiyaa 3 will maintain the blend of horror and comedy. He elaborated on this by mentioning that the original Bhool Bhulaiyaa was a psychologically thrilling masterpiece created by Priyadarshan and Akshay, which established a high benchmark. He expressed admiration for their work and chose not to alter it.

He expressed that Priyanadarshan ji and Akshay created a stunning first film, and he didn’t want to follow the path of psychological thrillers because he desired something unique. As he developed the script, however, it became clear that the key themes they wished to address in the movie leaned more towards horror, so they decided to change the genre instead.

In simpler terms, Anees Bazmee expressed that when they initially developed the script, it leaned more towards horror rather than a thriller. He felt that altering the genre and making it a psychological thriller might not be fair to the original concept of the script.

On November 1, 2024, Bhool Bhulaiyaa 3 is ready to hit the screens, but it faces a competition from Rohit Shetty’s multi-starred film, Singham Again, releasing on the same day. Today, excitement has reached new heights as the trailer for Bhool Bhulaiyaa 3 was unveiled.
