Lisa Kudrow Just Revealed The Story Behind How Romy And Michele Came Into Being, And I Had No Idea Jon Lovitz Was Involved

As a seasoned gamer who has navigated through countless worlds and timelines, I find it utterly fascinating to delve into the real-life stories of our beloved entertainers, such as Lisa Kudrow’s journey that led her to stardom in Romy and Michele’s High School Reunion.

It’s quite likely that many cinephiles have enjoyed the classic comedy “Romy and Michele’s High School Reunion,” featuring Mira Sorvino and Lisa Kudrow in the main roles. But here’s something you may not be aware of regarding its production, and the role Jon Lovitz played in it. If that’s news to you, I can understand why. Both Lovitz and Kudrow are renowned for their comedic talents, with significant contributions to shows like Saturday Night Live (SNL) and Friends respectively. Interestingly, they share a history as well, having worked together long before these iconic series.

As a devotee, I’d like to share that my comedy roots run deep, stemming from my time with the LA comedy troupe, the Groundlings. Recently, when I sat on a panel alongside fellow Groundlings spanning five decades, I had the pleasure of reminiscing about my past with Jon Lovitz. It turns out we grew up together! In fact, during my quest to break into acting, it was Lovitz who offered me sage advice. To quote myself:

Grew up alongside my brother’s closest friend, Jon Lovitz. It was during the summer I graduated college when he landed a spot on Saturday Night Live. Upon learning about his new opportunity, I expressed to him my desire to try acting. He encouraged me by suggesting I attend The Groundlings, a renowned comedy and improvisation theater, as it was where he had honed most of his skills. I explained that I was a theater major in college and had taken various acting classes. The Groundlings, being the only establishment specializing in sketch comedy and improvisation, seemed like the perfect fit for me. Uninterested in traditional acting classes filled with brooding introspection, I simply called to enroll. When asked about my recent performance experience, I admitted it had been since junior high. They assigned me a teacher named Cynthia Szigeti to work with initially, and after some time, I was allowed to audition for their advanced classes.

It’s quite intriguing to learn about this link between the two actors; I can’t wait to find out more. On another note, seeking guidance from others can indeed be a risky move, particularly within the entertainment world. Nevertheless, it seems that the former star of NewsRadio played a crucial role in guiding the actress who later became Phoebe Buffay towards success. After all, having supportive friends who care about your well-being is truly priceless.

As Lisa Kudrow joined The Groundlings, various job prospects started to emerge. Notably, during this period, the cast member of Mad About You pursued a captivating role that ultimately transformed her life. In her own words, Kudrow recalled:

In a different setting, a fellow performer named Robin Schiff penned a play titled ‘Ladies Room.’ To secure financing for the production, they conducted backers’ auditions. They sought opinions from teachers about potential candidates, and Tracy Newman suggested that I should try out for this special audition. This was my debut in the world of auditions, and to my delight, I got selected! The character I played was Airhead No 2. The backers were impressed and approved the funding for the play, resulting in me being cast as Airhead No 2. There were two characters named Airhead, with mine becoming Romy, while the other performer took on the role of Michele. This marked my first audition, my initial stage appearance, and my introduction to a professional acting character.

In summary, “Romy and Michele’s High School Reunion,” released in 1997, has become a significant part of film history due to its widespread appeal. The movie is recognized for many memorable scenes, such as Alan Cumming’s dance performance. Directed by David Mirkin, this witty and intelligent comedy starring women resonated with those who didn’t fit into the “popular” clique during their school years.

It’s funny to think that there was a time at which Lisa Kudrow wasn’t a household name. Today, it’s even wilder to know that fans can thank the Jon Lovitz-to-Groundlings-pipeline for her start in the business. And, without Lovitz, who knows if fans would’ve ever been graced with Kudrow’s winning performance as Michele Weinberger. And, considering her impeccable work in the film, that’s a reality I don’t want to imagine.
