Ahead Of It's Always Sunny Crossover, Abbot Elementary Bosses Just Eased One Concern I Had About The TV Mashup

As someone who has spent countless hours laughing at the antics of both “Abbott Elementary” and “It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia,” I can confidently say that their upcoming crossover is the stuff of dreams! The idea that these two hilarious shows will merge, even if only briefly, fills me with unbridled joy.

As a die-hard fan of TV shows, I can’t contain my excitement for Season 4 of Abbott Elementary, which is set to air in 2024! What’s got me really buzzing is the long-awaited crossover with the gang from It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia. With all the speculation about what will happen when these hilarious characters collide, it’s no wonder fans are eager for answers. Unfortunately, the showrunners have kept tight-lipped about the specifics of the storyline. However, a recent announcement by the Abbott team has put my mind at ease regarding one concern I had about this TV event.

It’s not uncommon for well-known TV shows to blend together, and there have been numerous examples of this throughout the history of television. Yet, in my opinion, the best TV crossovers typically involve entire episodes rather than just brief appearances or quick moments during the opening or closing segments. This is what concerns me regarding the potential collaboration between “It’s Always Sunny” and “Abbott Elementary,” though I should clarify that “It’s Always Sunny At Abbott Elementary” is a name I’ve coined for this hypothetical crossover.

Fans can rest easy knowing that key characters from “It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia” will be prominently featured in the upcoming ninth episode of Season 4, as confirmed by Patrick Schumacker and Justin Halpern of Abbott EPs. Schumacker made it clear that all members of “The Gang” will play significant roles, and he hinted that a beloved character from the show could have a particularly important part in the storyline.

As a fan, I’m thrilled to say we’ve gathered everyone, including ‘A,’ ‘B,’ ‘C,’ and ‘D.’ It’s all them in our episode! The idea of blending our show with another was initially a humorous thought, given the potential for a clash in tones. However, when Rob and Charlie brought their thoughts to our writers room, we brainstormed some exciting concepts. Through exchanging beat sheets and outlines, we developed a plan that eased all our worries about the shows’ contrasting styles. The moment filming started with Charlie, any remaining doubts vanished. The harmony between the shows was evident!

Currently, I’m quite curious about how Charlie Day’s character, Charlie Kelly, contributes to this seemingly humorous storyline. Notably, Charlie’s illiteracy is a unique trait that could be effectively exploited in a school-based sitcom. Although I wonder how this will play out, I’m glad that the cast members, including Charlie Day, Rob McElhenney, Kaitlin Olson, Glenn Howerton, and Danny DeVito, are all involved. It seems that the writers of both shows have collaborated closely to preserve creative consistency. Patrick Schumacher assures us that viewers unfamiliar with the feel of Sunny won’t be left bewildered.

It seems to function perfectly fine without external factors interfering.

Prior to Rob McElhenney officially announcing the crossover on social media, many fans had already speculated that It’s Always Sunny would feature in it. Now, a multitude of enthusiasts are posting their thoughts about it on social media platforms. I must admit, I’m not entirely sure what this collaboration between comedic TV giants will entail. However, one thing is certain: the characters from both shows will now have ample opportunities to appear together on screen.

Tonight at 9:30 p.m. Eastern Time, “Abbott Elementary” comes back on ABC, and the filming for Season 17 of “It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia” on FX will begin soon. You can also watch episodes of both shows if you have a Hulu subscription.
