The Writers Guild of America West has instructed its members to stop collaborating with the production company Millennium Pictures, because they are not part of the current union contract.
“The union leadership has informed members that under Rule 8, WGA members are not allowed to work for Millennium Pictures, Inc. (Millennium) or any of its associated companies on writing projects, nor can they option or sell scripts to Millennium, as the company is not a signatory to our upcoming three-year contract in 2023.
Furthermore, the union representatives claimed that The Guild has frequently had disputes with Millennium due to their failure to pay writers their initial compensation, residuals, and timely payments as stipulated in the MBA. Consequently, The Guild has decided that Millennium lacks financial stability and demands a sufficient security deposit before they can join agreements. So far, Millennium has declined to comply with this request.
For the first time since 2023, the Writers Guild of America West (WGA West) has informed its members that Millennium Productions is not a signatory to the WGA’s contracts from 2020 and previous years.
The Hollywood Reporter has reached out to Millennium Media for comment.
Meredith Stiehm, as guild president, along with vice president Michele Mulroney and secretary-treasurer Betsy Thomas, contended that the disagreement is primarily to shield Millennium Pictures from lowering “writers’ quality standards and work conditions.” They further stated that until a resolution is reached, Millennium should not reap the benefits of writing services offered by WGA members.
Established by Avi Lerner, the producer behind Rambo, Millennium Media is recognized primarily for its frequent production of action films on a modest budget, such as Olympus Has Fallen, Hitman’s Wife’s Bodyguard, and Drive Angry. Millennium Media also owns Nu Boyana Film Production Studio in Bulgaria, which has served as the location for many of their own projects as well as others, including 300: Rise of an Empire.
