As a seasoned gamer who has witnessed the evolution of on-screen action heroes, I must say Dylan O’Brien’s journey resonates deeply with me. His tale of resilience and self-advocacy is one that echoes the spirit of many gaming characters we admire. Much like how my character in “The Last of Us” had to navigate through a post-apocalyptic world, Dylan found himself navigating through the harsh realities of Hollywood.
Dylan O’Brien is speaking candidly regarding the health worries he experienced during the production of “The Maze Runner: The Death Cure“, a movie set where he ended up getting severe injuries following an accident that occurred during filming.
During a recent chat with Men’s Health, the Saturday Night celebrity reflected on a pivotal moment in his life that occurred back in 2016. While filming the third part of the Maze Runner series, an accident happened when he was suddenly detached from a moving vehicle while wearing a safety harness and got hit by another car.
As a fan looking back, I can say this experience transformed me profoundly, especially when it came to asserting my individuality on set. The environment often pushes young actors into submission, and they try to maintain control by suggesting things like, “Don’t be a hassle,” or “Are you causing problems?” Kind of statements that make one feel like they’re being difficult or complaining.
After his accident, the former star of “Teen Wolf” shared that he now asserts himself more on set, emphasizing that prioritizing self-care should not be misconstrued as being challenging or problematic.
As a gamer, I’d put it like this: “They may try to deceive you into believing that I’m causing trouble, but let me tell you, I was just a 24-year-old trying to voice my concerns about our strategy. My opinions were overlooked, disregarded. And unfortunately, the consequences of that, well, they took place. And from what I can gather, it seems like those responsible got away scot-free.
He continued, “It’s taught me that, at the end of the day, in these spaces, you have your own back, and that’s the most you can rely on. I just turned 33. I’ve been doing this for 15 years. I know the person I am, and the character I bring to set, and the way I treat people and the way that I treat a workspace, and I know I’m not difficult. I know I’m not an asshole. I know I was trying to protect myself that day, and so I’ve just never forgotten that. That’s always rung true as being the thing to hold with me.”
In 2017, the actor known as Ponyboi expressed gratitude to The Hollywood Reporter for the opportunity to share that his movie “American Assassin” was a significant milestone in his career because it was his debut project after the accident he had experienced.
During a challenging period in my life, I found it incredibly tough to comprehend and carry out tasks, but looking back now, I couldn’t be more grateful that I persevered. It turned out to be quite beneficial for me in many aspects. This film will always hold a special place in my heart. It was indeed a significant milestone in my life, almost like regaining my footing again.
