As a seasoned gamer of the One Chicago universe, I must say that the latest episode of Chicago P.D. has got me hooked yet again! The shift from Ruzek’s turmoil to Atwater’s budding romance with Val has been a breath of fresh air. While it may not be the healthiest choice in real life to date coworkers, let’s face it, we’re not here for reality, we’re here for the thrill of One Chicago!
Warning: spoilers ahead for the third episode of Chicago P.D. Season 12, called “Off Switch.”
In the 2024 TV schedule, Chicago P.D. put character Ruzek under intense scrutiny due to the murder of his friend and fellow officer. However, the One Chicago cop drama then shifted its attention to Atwater. After meeting an intriguing woman named Val in a bar, Atwater found himself involved in a robbery-gone-awry case where the traumatized witness required assistance from the Intelligence Unit. By the end of the episode, Atwater made a thoughtful gesture, hinting at the longstanding tradition within the unit when it comes to romantic entanglements with colleagues… to a certain extent.
In a somewhat playful tone, it’s common knowledge among fans that Atwater’s romantic relationships have been brief or casual, and given the nature of a series like Chicago P.D., which is heavily focused on police work, it primarily explores pairings when both characters are colleagues. Is it suitable for the characters to frequently date their coworkers? Perhaps not in reality, but that’s part of the enjoyment of the One Chicago universe we’re discussing.
Take a glance at his long-standing colleagues! Ruzek, Burgess, Upton, and Halstead have all been involved in numerous romantic entanglements within their unit. However, since Season 6, the ‘Uzkov’ era seems to have gone unacknowledged by many, and I can understand why if you ask me.
Val appears to be an engaging romantic prospect for Atwater, especially considering she managed to get him to put down his phone by the episode’s end and offer a sincere apology for his earlier overreaction. Moreover, her character as a potential forensic psychologist who could lend insights on cases adds intrigue, leading me to be hopeful about their dynamic.
In Season 7, Atwater almost had a romantic involvement with Rojas on Chicago P.D., which was an unusual direction for the show. Laroyce Hawkins even supported the idea of them as a couple, giving them the name “RoWater”. However, Lisseth Chavez’s character was written off before Season 8, effectively ending any potential romantic storyline for LaRoyce Hawkins. The series never clarified Rojas’ fate, so if you want to rewatch that part of Chicago P.D., you can do so with a Peacock subscription, but be prepared – the show doesn’t explain what happened to Rojas.
In summary, I’m expecting that Val’s collaboration with the CPD, even though he’s not directly in the Intelligence Unit, might foster a balanced dynamic on the show. Moreover, it’s delightful to witness LaRoyce Hawkins exploring a romantic plotline on Chicago P.D., considering many of his coworkers have previously had such storylines. I’ve been hoping for Atwater to advance to detective to introduce a fresh narrative for him, so if he doesn’t receive the promotion this season, I’m still open to this development.
According to the latest preview, it appears that Voight might be taking center stage for a case that could benefit from assistance, possibly even from Olivia Benson of Law & Order: SVU, or another detective from Chicago P.D.’s SVU division. Here’s a glimpse:
