Javed Akhtar blames his drinking habit for failed first marriage with Honey Irani; claims it could have been saved: ‘You take impulsive decisions…’

Notable screenwriter Javed Akhtar was once wed to Honey Irani, and together they parented Farhan Akhtar and Zoya Akhtar. Lately, Akhtar disclosed personal battles with alcoholism from his youth, which he also attributed as a contributing factor to the breakdown of their initial union. He acknowledged past mistakes in life.

During a chat with Sapan Verma on his YouTube channel, renowned lyricist Javed Akhtar was questioned if there were any mistakes he made in the past that significantly shaped him as he aged. In response, the Deewar writer candidly confessed that he spent a considerable amount of time consumed by alcohol. He referred to himself as an “alcoholic” and reminisced about quitting drinking on July 31, 1991.

The 79-year-old man reflected that he could have spent a decade productively instead of consuming alcohol unproductively. He also urged young people to abstain from drinking. He believes that, when looking back on his life, almost every significant mistake he made was influenced by alcohol.

He expressed remorse over the breakdown of his initial marriage. He believes it could’ve been prevented. However, his reckless behavior and excessive drinking were contributing factors. In a state of intoxication, one tends to make hasty decisions and argue about trivial matters that are not worth the fuss. These mistakes, he admitted, were primarily his.

In the third installment of his documentary series, Angry Young Men, Akhtar spoke candidly about the breakdown of his first marriage and expressed feelings of guilt towards Honey Irani, whom he considers to be the only person in the world for whom he harbors such sentiments. He also acknowledged that if he had been more understanding at the time, many issues might have been avoided.

Javed Akhtar tied the knot with Honey Irani back in 1972, and together they welcomed their children Farhan Akhtar and Zoya Akhtar. Later on, December 9, 1984, saw him exchanging vows with Shabana Azmi. Unfortunately, his marriage to Honey Irani ended in divorce by 1985.

In his career, Javed has recently appeared in a documentary series called “Angry Young Men,” directed by Namrata Rao. This series explores the prestigious filmmaking journey that he and co-writer Salim Khan shared.
