Disney Announces Release Dates for Freakier Friday and Lilo & Stitich

As a seasoned moviegoer with decades of cinematic adventures under my belt, I must say that the upcoming summer of 2025 promises to be a veritable feast for the eyes and heart. The news of Disney’s revisitation of both “Freakier Friday” and the live-action remake of “Lilo & Stitch” has sent waves of nostalgia and anticipation coursing through me.

2025 summer season is set to be scorching hot as Disney prepares to release two exciting films: a sequel titled “Freakier Friday” and a live-action adaptation of the classic tale, “Lilo & Stitch”. The new installment of “Freaky Friday”, which features recent Oscar winner Jamie Lee Curtis and Lindsay Lohan, will premiere on August 8, 2025. In contrast, director Dean Fleischer Camp’s version of Lilo Pelekai and her lovable alien companion, Experiment 626, popularly known as Stitch (Chris Sanders), is scheduled to hit theatres first on May 23, 2025, according to Deadline.

I found myself nestled in the director’s chair for my most recent cinematic journey, the critically praised animated epic “The Wild Robot“. For those yet to witness this delight, it carries a striking similarity to the initial concept I nurtured when collaborating with Dean DeBlois on “Lilo & Stitch“, a project we both spearheaded. In a candid chat with Vulture, I shared:

“Here’s the weird thing: I didn’t even make that connection until about two weeks ago. I went over to visit Dean DeBlois, my co-director on Lilo & Stitch, who is in the midst of working on the How to Train Your Dragon live-action reboot. And he pointed that out! He said, “It’s kind of like you went full circle and went back to the film that you were trying to make before you moved Lilo & Stitch into the human world.”

Originally, “Lilo & Stitch” left an impression on screens way back in 2002, while the remake of “Freaky Friday”, starring Jamie Lee Curtis and Lindsay Lohan, premiered a year afterwards, in 2003. Therefore, fans have been eagerly anticipating these entertaining sequels for more than two decades now.

Refashioning the 1976 movie “Freaky Friday” wasn’t a guaranteed success, but surprisingly, critics seemed to favor the Disney remake featuring Jamie Lee Curtis and Lindsay Lohan (88% rating on Rotten Tomatoes) over Jodie Foster and Barbara Harris’ original version (71% Tomatometer rating on RT). As filming for the modern take, titled “Freakier Friday“, concluded in August, Curtis took to Instagram to express her delight and praise Lohan. In an online post, she wrote:

This coming Friday marks an especially exciting day, some might even call it Peak Friday or Tearful Tuesday. We still have a few days left next week, but the momentum is starting to slow down. Arriving at work this morning, I was greeted by hundreds of people preparing for the filming in California…

I’m deeply appreciative of my FILM DARLING, @lindsaylohan. We wouldn’t have created this incredible movie without her. She recently gave me a @suziekondi shirt after I admired hers, and today I wore it as a tribute to her. Time for the wig and work now. Thanks for all the love from @disneyd23! It was simply extraordinary!

At this year’s D23 Expo, movies like “Lilo & Stitch” and “Freaky Friday” took center stage. These promising Disney productions are set to debut amidst a summer season filled with numerous eagerly awaited rivals. The arrival of James Gunn’s “Superman” and the martial arts duo of Ralph Macchio and Jackie Chan in “Karate Kid: Legends” will add to this competitive landscape.

Marvel’s Thunderbolts is set to join the ongoing success of the MCU, following the triumphs of Deadpool and Wolverine, with Captain America: Brave New World featuring Harrison Ford as the Red Hulk’s romantic interest slated for release next year. In addition, the much-anticipated Disney title, Tron: Ares, will reemerge on the grid in 2025.
