As a seasoned gamer with a penchant for movies that push boundaries, I eagerly await the release of “Anora”. The director Sean Baker‘s appeal to watch this film on the big screen resonates deeply with me, as I believe there’s no substitute for the immersive experience a cinema offers.
Sean Baker invited cinema-goers to catch his award-winning film, “Anora,” on the large screen during the BFI London Film Festival on Friday.
Just before the U.K. premiere of the movie at London’s Royal Festival Hall, the director stood side by side with his leading actress, Mikey Madison, and expressed that the film proves it’s possible to create “adult-themed” productions, devoid of typical elements like superheroes and explosions.
They had a quick conversation with the festival director, Kristy Matheson, discussing their collaboration history and why Coney Island presented the perfect setting for Baker’s dark retelling of Cinderella.
For five consecutive years at Cannes, Neon has been honored with a win, this time featuring a screwball dramedy starring Madison (known for her roles in “Scream” and “Once Upon a Time in Hollywood”). She plays the lead character, a sex worker residing in Brighton Beach, Brooklyn, who unexpectedly becomes entangled with the son of a Russian oligarch, portrayed by Mark Eidelstein.
Anora was first showcased at the prestigious Cannes Film Festival, subsequently graced screens at Telluride, Toronto, and San Sebastián.
Following the screening of the movie at the Ham Yard Hotel in London on Thursday, Baker and Madison discussed the methodology behind filming the intimate scenes. When prompted about whether the team employed intimacy coordinators, Baker responded: “No, we didn’t. I firmly believe that an actor should have that choice. Naturally, we extended the same option to Mikey and Mark [Eidelstein]. However, since I’ve directed sexual themes throughout my career, I was at ease with the process and, as a producer of this film, the primary concern is always the well-being and comfort of my cast members.
By the time we started filming, we felt so at ease that the whole process seemed very professional and methodical,” he continued. “There was no room for spontaneity. We refer to these scenes as ‘sex shots,’ not ‘sex scenes,’ because they’re carefully planned and executed.
Madison mentioned that they spent a significant amount of time discussing the details of each scene and visualizing them. Sean and his wife, as well as producing partner Sammy [Samantha Quan], would often sketch out how these scenes would play out on camera.

Anora will be released Oct. 18 by Neon in the U.S., and on Nov. 1 in the U.K.
