As a longtime Marvel fan, I can’t help but admire the clever antics of Ryan Reynolds and Shawn Levy in unveiling the iconic Deadpool & Wolverine first look. The way they took matters into their own hands to prevent spoilers from ruining one of the most highly anticipated Marvel movies is a testament to their dedication and ingenuity.
Do you recall in July 2023 when Ryan Reynolds caused quite a stir by posting the initial photos from the set featuring Deadpool and Wolverine? In these images, Hugh Jackman was wearing Wolverine’s iconic yellow suit for the first time. This exciting movie, filled with action and Easter eggs, wasn’t scheduled to hit cinemas until 2024. However, about a year before its release, Jackman gave us a sneak peek of the comic-book-accurate costume he would wear. The reason for releasing this image was essentially a playful way for him to counteract people who were curious about what was happening on set.
In the special features of the Deadpool & Wolverine DVD, Reynolds and director Shawn Levy discuss their experience filming at Pitstone Quarry in England, mentioning the difficulties they faced, such as paparazzi hiding on a hilltop trying to sell photos of the movie set. To prevent any potential spoilers for one of Marvel’s top films, Reynolds decided to handle the situation himself. He explained that he did this to keep things under wraps.
To give you an insight into how some behind-the-scenes marketing and PR happens, this is the first instance where photographers (paparazzi) caught us from a vantage point, unaware that Hugh [Jackman] was going to be dressed up there. In order to prevent these unscrupulous spoilers from profiting, we hastily took our own photo and shared it on Instagram.
Speaking in a more subdued manner compared to the other producer and lead actor, Shawn Levy noted that occasionally, adaptability is crucial, even when it involves disclosing information that might not have been fully prepared for public viewing.
