As a dedicated fan of both “Abbott Elementary” and “It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia”, I am absolutely thrilled about the upcoming crossover episode! The idea of these two distinct worlds colliding is an intriguing prospect, and I can only imagine the hilarious scenarios that will unfold when the teachers of Abbott Elementary come face-to-face with Charlie Kelly and his motley crew.
Justin Halpern and Patrick Schumacker, executive producers, have shared an exciting piece of news regarding the much-anticipated crossover between their shows, which are both based in Philadelphia. Fans can’t wait to see how these two worlds intersect. In a chat with Variety, they revealed that a significant plotline involving a character from It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia will feature prominently in the upcoming episode.
In a fresh turn of events, Quinta Brunson’s critically acclaimed ABC comedy series, “Abbott Elementary,” began its fourth season on October 9, with a total of 22 episodes planned for release weekly. This mockumentary sitcom focuses on the day-to-day lives of dedicated teachers at an underfunded inner-city public school, while “Sunny” revolves around a group of friends managing a dive bar in South Philadelphia. An exciting crossover event is scheduled for Episode 9, where characters from “It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia,” including Rob McElhenney, Charlie Day, Danny DeVito, and other cast members, will make an appearance at the school. According to executive producer Nick Faldon (Schumacker), Charlie Kelly, played by Charlie Day, will play a significant role in this episode.
In our latest episode, the character portrayed by Charlie Day plays a substantial role. Initially, the idea of these shows crossing over was seen as a humorous concept. On the surface, it seemed like an odd fit due to potential differences in tone. However, when Rob and Charlie presented their ideas in our writers’ room, we brainstormed some broad concepts that worked surprisingly well.
After that, we exchanged several emails containing beat sheets and outlines. They were extremely open to all our ideas. The apprehensions we had regarding the different tones of the shows potentially clashing were quickly eased as soon as we began filming with Charlie.
McElhenney hinted at the upcoming crossover event on X through a tweet when he posted a picture featuring himself and Day alongside Quinta Brunson, the creator and star of Abbott Elementary. He wrote casually: “Oh. Hello.” Similarly, Brunson uploaded the same photo with the caption: “Season 4 of Abbott Elementary gets quite Sunny :)”. When speaking to Variety about this collaboration, she expressed her enthusiasm stating, “I’m thrilled to mix things up in such an unusual way.
‘Abbott Elementary’s’ Season 4 Crossover Episode Details
As per Halpern and Schumacker, Brunson developed the concept of crossover following a motivating chat with McElhenney at a gathering. On October 3rd, the actor posted a picture on X (originally Twitter), which included DeVito and the stars of Abbott Elementary, Tyler James Williams and William Stanford Davis. Halpern shared with Variety: “…Brunson thought of this idea after talking with McElhenney at an event…
In typical comedy writers’ rooms, discussions often start by criticizing other shows airing on TV. However, Quinta approaches things differently. Instead of bashing, she enters the room discussing TV series she admires. She has a vast knowledge of sitcoms and finds joy in expressing her enthusiasm for them. ‘Sunny’ is a show that significantly influenced comedy writers, making it an exciting opportunity to temporarily play within their creative space. This idea was sparked by Quinta’s passion for sitcoms and her desire to collaborate with other shows she finds hilarious.
In the upcoming crossover between Always Sunny and Abbott Elementary, the main characters – Mac (McElhenney), Dennis (Glenn Howerton), Dee (Kaitlin Olson), Charlie (Day), and Frank (DeVito) from Always Sunny – will have significant roles, not just brief appearances. According to Variety, their storylines will fill the entire hour of the show. As Schumacker stated, “We’ve got the whole gang, the ‘A’ story, ‘B’ story, ‘C’, ‘D’, it’s all them.
The television series “It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia” first aired back in 2005, and it soon garnered recognition for its talented cast and distinctive dark humor. In the year 2020, FX decided to extend the popular sitcom for another four seasons, making a total of 18 seasons. With Season 17 currently under production, fans are eagerly speculating about the possibility of another “Abbott Elementary/Always Sunny” crossover on FX. However, when asked about this prospect, Schumacker replied, “I’m not sure if we can provide an answer to that question at this moment.
Seasons 1-2 of Abbott Elementary are available to stream on ABC.com or with the ABC app. New episodes air on Wednesdays on ABC at 9:30 PM ET and the next day on Hulu.
