Christina Ricci Reflects on Her History With Dark and Spooky Roles

As a cinephile with a soft spot for the macabre and a deep appreciation for timeless cinema, I can confidently say that Christina Ricci has left an indelible mark on the industry. Her career, which spans three decades, is a testament to her versatility and knack for playing complex, unconventional characters, particularly those with a darker edge.

Christina Ricci’s professional journey began during her childhood, where she gained recognition for portraying intelligent and eerie characters. Her cinematic debut happened in 1990 with ‘Mermaids’, but it was her role as Wednesday Addams in ‘The Addams Family’ that truly put her on the map. She further cemented this iconic character in 1993’s ‘Addams Family Values’. In 1995, she starred as Kat Harvey, a teen who forms a connection with a ghost in ‘Casper’. Four years after, Ricci collaborated with Tim Burton, a renowned creator of spooky tales, for his gothic horror ‘Sleepy Hollow’. During a recent chat with PEOPLE, Ricci reflected on her pioneering role in the macabre genre.

Your kindness is greatly appreciated. I wouldn’t consider myself a trailblazer, but rather someone fortunate to have had the opportunity to portray intriguing characters as a young person during a time when our cultural landscape was evolving. This allowed me to play interesting roles for both young girls and women.

Ricci, since breaking into Hollywood with the film “Mermaids” starring Cher and Winona Ryder, has maintained a steady career. Her talent has been recognized and applauded in productions such as “The Ice Storm”, “The Opposite of Sex”, “Monster”, and the series “Yellowjackets”. She credits her long-lasting career to good fortune.

It seems to me that I got quite fortunate. The characters I couldn’t have portrayed as convincingly as required were the alternative female roles and child characters being written. Therefore, I’m grateful for the chances, parts, and roles that came my way.

In addition to playing Misty in the show “Yellowjackets”, Ricci has also reunited with Burton (previously worked together on “Sleepy Hollow” and “Big Fish”) for Netflix’s series “Wednesday”. This popular series features Jenna Ortega, who resembles Ricci’s career trajectory by portraying complex characters. In the first season of this show, Ricci appears as Marilyn Thornhill. Recently, while chatting with Forbes about her new project, a West Elm collaboration named “Christina Ricci’s Cat Full of Spiders Tarot Deck and Guidebook“, Ricci shared her thoughts on seeing Jenna Ortega take on the same character she originally played in 1991.

As a fan and admirer of the Wednesday character, I always enjoy watching Jenna portray her. Even though I don’t personally claim ownership of the character, I’ve appreciated all the actresses who have played her in the past. It’s just thrilling to be part of this whole experience and to share the same world—working with Tim again has been an absolute pleasure.

Initially, Lisa Loring played Wednesday Addams on screen in the 1960s TV series “The Addams Family,” making her the first actress to do so. Later, Sarah Jessica Parker took over the role. Although she didn’t feel a strong connection to the character, Parker continues to use Wednesday Addams as inspiration due to the character’s immense popularity. Jennifer Ortega is the latest actress to portray Wednesday on-screen and will reprise her role in Season 2 of “Wednesday,” scheduled for release in 2025.

In the upcoming third season, you’ll see Ricci on the popular streaming platform, Paramount+, where Yellowjackets is currently airing. Previously, the first season of this series was available on Netflix.
