Gladiator 2 Runtime is Not as Epic as Original Oscar Winner

As a seasoned movie buff with over three decades of cinephile indulgence under my belt, I must say that Ridley Scott’s upcoming epic, “Gladiator II,” has managed to pique my interest like few films have in recent memory. The announcement of the film’s runtime of 148 minutes, while shorter than its predecessor, still promises an immersive experience that only a master director like Scott can deliver.

As a movie critic, I’ve learned that Ridley Scott’s upcoming epic will run slightly shorter than his iconic film “Gladiator” featuring Russell Crowe and Joaquin Phoenix. Despite being one of his longest films to date, it clocks in at seven minutes less. With the sequel set to grace our screens in just a month, Scott has hinted at ambitious plans to expand this story into a trilogy, promising an epic saga that spans multiple films.

According to Slash Film, the upcoming film “Gladiator II” will run for approximately 148 minutes, which equates to 2 hours and 28 minutes. This runtime is shorter than the original “Gladiator” (2000) that clocked in at 2 hours and 35 minutes. Director Ridley Scott’s longest film to date is the 2023 release, “Napoleon,” with a theatrical runtime of 2 hours and 38 minutes. However, the director’s cut adds an additional 48 minutes, extending the total running time to 3 hours and 24 minutes. Ridley Scott is well-known for increasing the length of his films throughout his career; for instance, “Kingdom of Heaven” (2005) runs for 2 hours and 24 minutes, while “Prometheus” (2012) lasts 2 hours and 4 minutes. Both “Alien” from 1979 and “Blade Runner” from 1982 run for 1 hour and 57 minutes each.

In conversation with Empire regarding “Gladiator II”, Scott expressed his enthusiasm by stating, “I consider it to be my finest work yet.” He further added that the movie showcases the most spectacular action scene he has ever directed.

In our upcoming movie, we kickstart the story with an exhilarating action scene that outshines any I’ve previously created. This opening will surpass the grandeur of ‘Napoleon’s’. The audience can expect a thrilling confrontation between Lucius and a rhinoceros within the Colosseum. With the help of artificial intelligence, we have a rhino that can sprint at 64 kilometers per hour, perform sharp turns on the spot, and let out thunderous snorts and roars!

Is Ridley Scott Planning a Gladiator Trilogy?

In “Gladiator II”, we find an ensemble of renowned actors such as Paul Mescal, Denzel Washington, Joseph Quinn, and Pedro Pascal gracing the screen. The story unfolds over two decades following the conclusion of the initial movie. Here’s a summary of the plot provided by the producers:

Years have passed since Lucius (Mescal) saw Maximus die, killed by his own uncle. Now, after his home is taken over by Rome’s ruthless emperors, Lucius finds himself compelled to fight in the Colosseum. Driven by anger and a desire to protect the Empire, he must draw upon memories from his past to find courage and honor, aiming to restore the grandeur of Rome for its people.

In the sequel titled “Gladiator II“, the matured Lucius, who is Lucilla’s son from the original film, assumes the lead role as an unwilling hero. During his voyage, he encounters a succession of morally gray characters, among them being Denzel Washington portraying Macrinus, a significant figure in the political arena.

Paramount Pictures unveiled a promotional video where the award-winning actor expressed his excitement about the project, remarking, “‘This is the most expansive production I’ve been part of. It’s colossal! A modern-day reincarnation of Cecil B. DeMille!’” In an interview with Variety, director Scott talked about Washington’s involvement in the film.

Denzel isn’t just an ordinary guy; he’s a provider of military equipment across Europe, offering not only food but also wine, oil, steel, and various weapons like spears, guns, cannons, and catapults. As such, he’s a very affluent individual. Instead of keeping racehorses in his stable, he maintains a group of gladiators. He’s quite the handsome man. He cruises around town in a golden Ferrari. I even splurged on a gold-decorated chariot for him.

Scott found parallels between the chaotic political climate of today and the power struggles in ‘Gladiator II’, focusing on the brutal authority figures. In simpler terms, he said, ‘Power is being misused, and no one dares to challenge it. That’s what we see happening now.'” Additionally, he shared that a potential third movie might draw inspiration from ‘The Godfather’.

I’ve been contemplating the possibility of Gladiator 3. It’s not just wishful thinking. The conclusion of Gladiator II resembles that of The Godfather, leaving us with the question, ‘Now, what have I gotten myself into?’ The forthcoming film will delve into a character who doesn’t want to be in his current circumstances.

Gladiator II opens in U.S. theaters on November 22. The first film is available to rent or buy through Amazon Prime Video or stream it on Paramount+.
