As a fan who’s been along for the ride since the very beginning, I can’t help but feel a pang of nostalgia and melancholy when I see Sean Astin posing with that Demodog replica. The image is like a time capsule, transporting me back to the heart-wrenching moment when Bob Newby met his untimely end in the Upside Down.
In a different yet relatable way: The world flipped upside down isn’t for the faint-hearted, and this ominous parallel universe filled with ferocious monsters has claimed several lives on the popular Netflix series, Stranger Things. Among these tragic losses, some have left a deeper impact, such as Sean Astin who portrayed Bob Newby. His heartbreaking demise still resonates with fans, and his recent post featuring a playful photo alongside a Demogorgon has brought back those bittersweet memories once more.
Unfortunately, Bob will likely not reappear amid the forthcoming Stranger Things 5. However, the Lord of the Rings alum surprised fans with a fun Instagram photo of himself posing with a Demodog — a younger version of a Demogorgen — replica at a recent convention, channeling his inner Super Bob. I don’t know about you, but this image is really affecting me on an emotional level. Sean Astin posing tough with the monster that killed his character? It’s bittersweet. But what I think I love about this post is it shows just how much the Goonies actor treasures all his roles, just as much as the fans do. It also confirms the Rudy star gives off the same kind, nerdy energy as Bob. I’m glad to see the lovable actor, who gave advice he to the child actors on set, hasn’t changed.
If you’ve been following Stranger Things since its initial seasons, you might recall the sorrow we all felt when Bob Newby met his unfortunate end. To me, his courage in helping Joyce, Will, and Hopper escape from the Hawkins lab is something that continues to stand out. You can see it in his eyes when he spots Joyce’s safety – a moment of relief and happiness. However, the heartache we experience when the Demodogs take him is truly unbearable.
Among the characters who have died in “Stranger Things”, Bob was the one that viewers had come to know and adore throughout an entire season first. Honestly, it’s hard not to feel affectionate towards Joyce Byers’s quirky and endearing boyfriend, Bob. Seeing him lying there alone still brings tears to my eyes.
It appears that I’m not alone in being emotionally affected by this photo. Even though Stranger Things 2 premiered seven years back, it seems some people are still struggling with Bob’s death. A comment from @bella.woods.36 on Instagram encapsulates the sorrow over Bob’s demise:
Everytime I rewatch stranger things I skip season two bc no death hurt as much as bobs
Jumping straight past Season 2 might seem a bit extreme, but it powerfully conveys the impact of Bob’s demise on us. To be honest, Stranger Things 2 was an instant sensation when it first came out, and I believe it’s underappreciated within the series. With Max joining the gang and the revelation of Will’s link to the Mindflayer, it adds depth to the franchise that deserves more recognition. Now, after seeing what unfolds in Season 4, the events of Season 2 take on an even more ominous tone.
I’m quite worried about what might happen to Will in the final episode of Stranger Things, given his strong link to the Upside Down, and I can’t help but worry it may resemble Bob’s fate. However, if there’s anyone who can find a way to conquer Vecna and rescue Will, it’s our beloved bike-riding, Dungeons & Dragons-playing group from Hawkins. For now, though, let’s keep fond memories of Bob and be grateful that Sean Astin is safe and healthy.
In 2025 television lineup, you’ll find the next installment of “Stranger Things” – season 5. To get ready for it, catch up on the first four seasons by subscribing to Netflix and streaming them.
