As a dedicated gamer who has spent countless hours immersed in the virtual world of movie musicals, I can confidently say that the prospect of a third Mamma Mia film is music to my ears! It’s been six long years since we last visited the magical island of Kalokairi, and it feels like an eternity without the infectious energy of ABBA’s tunes filling our lives.
Six years have passed since the cinema release of the Mamma Mia sequel, and fans are eagerly yearning for another voyage to Greece. Following the success of Mamma Mia: Here We Go Again at the box office, discussions swiftly moved towards a potential third Mamma Mia film. However, convincing the original cast to return poses a challenge. Interestingly enough, Amanda Seyfried, who plays Sophie Sheridan, has expressed one condition if she were to reprise her role – an aspect that seems surprising it hasn’t been addressed yet.
The cast and production team have expressed interest in revisiting the fictional Greek island of Kalokairi, with Seyfried among them. However, in an interview with The Spotlight via Entertainment Weekly, the actress revealed that if Sophie’s story is to continue, she has a crucial song request for her character: a specific song to be included in the narrative.
What I yearn to accomplish in particular is singing ‘Mamma Mia,’ as I haven’t done so yet. The tune was sung by Meryl and Lily before, but I believe Sophie deserves her chance since this song is my all-time favorite. In fact, it’s also my daughter’s favorite tune. Ever since I heard it, it has held a special place in my heart – you could say it’s a real ‘bop’. The vibe and energy behind it just resonate with me.
So far, there are two films, yet Amanda Seyfried’s leading character hasn’t sung the theme song. Let’s get a sequel approved for the third installment!
Although Sophie is a significant figure in the movie, it primarily revolves around her mother, Donna. Fortunately, in Mamma Mia 2, we saw Sophie and Sky welcoming a new addition to their family – a baby. This development seems to have laid an excellent foundation for the plot. The concept of Mamma Mia 3 delving into Donna’s mother’s story, portrayed by Cher, has been floated around, but I believe it would be fascinating to let Sophie share her own experiences as a mother and offer Jennifer’s Body actress an opportunity to sing “Mamma Mia”.
Apart from this, it’s hard to imagine the producers rejecting the idea of Sabrina Carpenter playing Sophie’s daughter in a movie, given the strong demand from fans. The popular singer-songwriter, known for her hit “Espresso,” recently performed a cover of the famous theme song from the musical on her Short ‘n Sweet Tour. This performance sparked a wave of fan requests for Carpenter to be cast, and even Idina Menzel (Seyfried’s character in the musical) has expressed interest, telling ABC News that she would enjoy singing with the young pop star.
Without a doubt, it’s time for this event to take place, considering Sabrina Carpenter’s past performances on stage and screen. Her impressive vocal abilities also make her an ideal choice to bring justice to ABBA’s music. Thank you for the music, Sabrina.

In my ideal world, I would love to see the whole lineage of Sheridan women back on the screen together, including Lily James, who played an incredible young Donna. The hardest to work in would be Meryl Streep, whose Donna died between films, but made a brief reappearance via Sophie’s imagination to sing a heartfelt rendition of “My Love, My Life.” However, The Devil Wears Prada actress said she would be down to do another Mamma Mia and even had a few silly ideas herself on how to get around the whole “death” factor.
It seems as though the creator of Mamma Mia, Judy Craymer, who’s been quietly brainstorming a third script, has already accomplished half the task with all these ideas swirling around. However, I can’t help but eagerly anticipate Amanda Seyfried bringing her dreams to life on screen!
As a devoted fan, I can hardly contain my excitement as I eagerly anticipate another dose of “Mamma Mia” magic! Fortunately, this irresistible rom-com jukebox musical has made its way onto the impressive lineup at Max, and is now ready to stream with just a Max subscription!
